After not receiving a response from Starline about making a 2" 357 mag case, I gave them a ring. They replied that they don't have the tooling to make such a long case.

Bummer, this would have provided a more reasonably priced alternative to the 5.56X50R brass, as well as having something more suited for 30 cal's, and a 357 Super, duper maximum magnum [Big Grin]

Another option would be Dieter Hornbear in Germany, he is reputed to make fine brass, and isn't limited to small calibers. I've heard his response time is quite slow, and not sure what the per case cost would be. If anyone else can think of other folks to contact, lemme know. I'd assume the majors would require a really big run to get their interest up.

Paul,

I had inquired a while back about Max brass and was told the same thing.

The confusing part is that they make all the brass for the Dan Wesson calibers and supposedly including Max brass. Dan Wesson has factory ammo available for all their calibers.

Starline does make 360 DW brass though.

You are right, a "basic" case in that length would be perfect for a high number of cartridges to neck them up down and sideways and long and short. [Big Grin] Including some of the old BP cartridges of yesteryear.

Talked to your "friend" up there today. [Wink]

Regards

Dennis?

I didn't make it to the range today, had loaded up some more plinker rounds in the 500 Jeffrey, would have been fun.

About 10 years ago on a trip to the Fajen plant south of Sedalia, MO where the twin companies of Starline and Sierra bullets are located side by side, Barb Holden, who operates the Starline plant, told me that the problem is the quantity of coupons they have to buy at one time. No, not $1 off coupons for a can of coffee, but the brass coin like wafers/plugs they start from.

The volume of brass required to make the longer case is greater than that for the Dan Wesson round, thus they have to start drawing from a larger mass of brass.

At the time, I think she said they had to buy something like 500k pieces, the minimum the brass mill would run of a given size.

Unless things have changed since I was there, the Holden family owns and operates both the Sierra bullet plant and the Starline brass plant.

Starline used to make 357 mag brass. I bought a box of 500 from midway about 8 or 10 years ago.

Mike,

That makes more sense then the equipment issue, as they are making 50 Alaskan brass, which is sort of a 348 win basic case, and as long as the case I was after.

Hey, Paul. Why not just buy a half million?

After having necked the .360 DW stuff down to .17, I am not sure that the labor required to even neck that stuff to .30 would have been worth it. I don't know how they make such hard brass.

Talk abut Sedalia, amost has me missing the midwest. Missouri turkey season isn't too far away.
