How do you have your scope set up for hunting? Do you set for Maximum Point Blank Range of a 4" circle? Do you Dymo tape increments on your scope? Just looking for suggestions or techniques out there.

I generally sight in my Varmint Hunting Handguns to have a maximum height above site line of 1.5", and 3.0" for my Deer Hunting Handguns. This has served me quite well over the years.

I use Butler Creek Flip Open Scope Lense Covers on all of my scopes, and tape a trajectory chart inside of the eyepiece Flip Open Scope Lense Cover. I just cut it out so it fits inside of the cover and attach it with double face tape. I like doing this as it is not seen except when the scope cover is open, and when it is open it is just a matter of looking up a little bit to see the chart.

Good Morning Bill!
I hope you don't mind if I answer your email here, as well as inserting my 2 cents!

IF I were sighting in my .223 Rem for Groundhogs, I would sight in my pistol 2" high at 200 yards.

IF I were sighting in my .308 Bellm for Deer or Bear, I would sight my pistol dead on at 200 yards. My reason for this is, the two bucks that I have shot were under 50 yards, and more importanly, where they were shot you could not see much more.

Shimming of scope bases.

Yes I do have my scope bases shimmed to reach 500 yards for targrt shooting. I would not recomend it for hunting. Two reasons, time and parrellax.
If you sight in at 100 yards with the scope bottomed out like I have mine, you have to take the time to get your eye alighment just right to keep the cross hairs from moving on the target. The closser you keep your scope setting to the middle of it's range the less parrellax you have, and most pistol scope are set to be parrellax free from 50 to 100 yards.

The shim material that I used is foil heat duct tape. This is very easy to work with and will stick to the bottom ring surface. It is only a few thousands thick. If my memory severs me right, I have 6 shims on the .308 and 4 on the .223. I wanted to rework the .308 B this winter, but the weather is just not alowing me to do so.

I hope this helps!

Den,

Thanks for the info. Since Southfork put restrictions on their Heavy "Unlimited" class, (now Heavy Limited!), and I can't use my BIG-ASS rifle, I want to set up an xp-100 for those groundhog matches. I like your idea on that set-up very ingenious!. See you there! I can't wait to show you my latest project gun!!!!

I don't know how many matches I'll be at this year! I have found a club that shoots on Saturday, not Sunday like Southfork. This will give me a day of rest before going back to work on Monday's.

The Club is in Shippensburg, near Harrisburg. The shoot 200/300/500 Meters. No pistol class, but were used to that anyhow!

I will try to come to at least one of Southfork's matches as I do want to say good-by to some of the people their.

Good Shooting! [Smile]
