Steve E.........
I had a muzzle tamer installed by Fox Ridge Outfitters after speaking to a female tech it seems the men were all out hunting so after trying it out I called and got a male tech he said they flat out don't work on the 454 casull.I'd suggest http://www.probed2000.com I have one of theirs on a 15" 30-06 Encore barrel and it works perfectly it's designed like the KDF brakes they'll tell you if it will work on a 460.
I have a factory T/C Muzzle Tamer on a heavy 460 S&W barrel (total length with Muzzle Tamer 15 inches) and it's effective. It should be just as effective with a tapered barrel.
A word is needed on "effective" though. Even with a muzzle brake, a 460 S&W has more recoil than many would be willing to tolerate. When I shoot mine off the bench the routine is ear plugs AND ear muffs, padding under my right elbow and a weight lifters glove on my right hand to keep the skin from being ripped off. Shooting it off hand, the recoil isn't too bad though.

The 454 casull ammo that gave me the most problems is Winchester 260gr Partition Gold when I fired it from the bench a vortec of dust followed the bullet down range. My handloads were more accurate and easier to control at 200 yards using W296 & H110 and cast performance bullets.
Thanks Guy's for the info. I guess I'll try it a while without a brake, maybe I can take it for a while. My 7-08 & 308 Encore pistol barrels don't have brakes and they aren't that bad from the bench, I usually do put something between my right elbow and the bench.

A brake is not as effective on straight wall cases as they are on bottleneck cases. The powder burn in the bbl is quicker on the straight walled case therefore the brake does not have as much time to port the escaping gases. Its just the opposite for rifle type bottleneck cartridges(slower powder burn+case neck is smaller diameter than case). That is why magna-porting works just as well as a brake on a revolver even though the brake has much more port area and also why brakes work much better than magna-ports on rifles.
