Does this rechamber usually (as a general rule) improve accuracy?? I have not read or seen much on the AI rounds other than the velocity improvements. My XP (as many well know [Wink] ) is a 22-250 and am considering this rechamber. I DO like the sharp shoulders and short nek of these rounds BUT is it worth the bucks??

Mike,
I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong... :-)

My understanding is that the AI's are more about effeciency than accuracy. That being said, any kind of enlargement of the chamber on some of the TC barrels is a good thing and can increase accuracy.

If I remember right, the .22-250 only sees about a 6% increase in effeciency. I can't remember off the top of my head how they figure it. Ackley had a couple of favorites - Bellm would have to remind me of them, but I know one of them was a quarter bore...

If you would like I can look that stuff up tomorrow, my books are at my office.

I had a rechambered 30-30AI 16 incher it was accurate, however, I have a 20 inch factory bbl in reg 30-30 and it is just as accurate. So I say 6 to one 1/2 doz. to another tho I did like that AI case [Wink] .

One area that is sometimes overlooked when seeking to improve accuracy is allowing the case to shift around when the firing pin hits the primer. We carefully throat barrels to insure that our bullets enter the bore perfectly centered, yet we'll let the case flop around which places tension on the bullet which risks pulling the bullet out of alignment. Anything you can do to reduce the tendency for the case to move around can only help.

It has been my experience, that the blown out, minimum taper, sharp shoulder design of the AI cartridge, if neck sized to maintain maximum body contact and minimum headspace, will not only help case life, but also that of accuracy.

Mike, I have zero experience with AI chamberings. I believe your original question was are they worth the $$$$. What kind of pricing are you getting (for a 6% increase)?

If 6% is a good number, and we use 23 grains of powder, I wouldn't want to invest more than the price of a scope mount and rings. (I'm only saving an equivalent of 1.38 grains of powder).

Here again I'm looking at the numbers only, the improved chambers get a good bit of time on the forums. (Meaning there may be more to it) Then again - to each his own........ [Big Grin]

Malm,
Thank you for pointing that out and confirming my thoughts about it. I have always believed the casing is basically a bushing for support and treat it as such. Yeah, there is alot more going on then that, but if you start at the beginning and treat all the areas the same down the path, all the pieces will come together nicely for flow. I have found it works very well.

Thanks again,

Mike
I just got my new issue of handloader magazine & it has a story on AI cartridges. It discusses both velocity & accuracy. Once I get home I'll scan the article & email it to you.
Rich Jake

I sent the article to your second email account.
