Chambered and test fired an Encore rifle barrel for one today.

Back when I did just custom rifle work, the .257 Imp. was probably the most popular chamber I cut.

The one I did today is set up to fire form shooting factory .257 Robts. ammo, but has the rim counterbore for using full length .444 Marlin brass to make cases, which, btw, neck down quite easily using at least .308 Win. and 7mm-08 Rem. size dies to form cases, followed by the .257 Imp. size die to further neck the cases to .25 and set the shoulder location.

The Imp. comes really close to .25/06 ballistics and is one of the most useful rifle cartridges. If one is looking for a top notch Encore caliber, this is a good one.

The 6.5x.257 Robts Imp., aka .260 A.A.R., is another good one that of course can be made from .444 cases. Redding supplies the dies for it and the .257 Imp.

Not quite, Jules. Recall that yours arrived not too long ago, and there are folks way ahead of you. Gotta draw the line somewhere. This gent has waited longer than I want to mention. Soon though, soon.

Little Mark's .375 muzzle brake is next on the agenda and the bluing batch I STILL have not done. You've already told us how big you are. I met Mark face to face in Springfield, IL. He's bigger 'n you and has been waiting longer, plus he has definite needs/plans/wants/desires/lusts for the barrel this fall..... like you don't right? [Wink]

Take heart, this waiting thing will change dramatically this fall.

Ha,Ha,Ha,Ha about the big thing. I was never the type person to jump in front of the line anyway. As long as I get it before I die<LOL>
Heck Buddy, I just don't want you to think I forgot about you [Razz] [Big Grin] [Razz]
I'll wait my turn like always......I mean, it's not like I don't have 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 other Bellm barrels to work with. [Big Grin]

Isn't the 444 Marlin case the parent case that J.D. Jones uses for his line of JDJ cartridges.

Quite a few, yes, but he uses other cases also.

.358 JDJ, .375 JDJ, and I believe .338 JDJ are all on full length .444s. His .430 JDJ is a shortened .444.

I know I am supposed to be my brother's keeper, but I really don't keep up with what Brer Jones does. Those that do might fill in the gaps here.

Hey there little fella! Caught me talking about you!

Today was running day, interupted by getting stranded with a fuel pump out on the "War Wagon." JUST barely made it to the post office with the last of the shipments for today.
Shop time tomorrow, all day! YOU are ON!

Hit man? The guy that breaks one leg and makes a promise about the other one? [Big Grin]

Mark,
I took pics of your muzzle brake, but don't have a handy way to publish them. Will see if ole 1buba will lend a hand tonight maybe.

Brake turned out pretty slick. I like it on the octagon barrel!

What was really gratifying to me was the fact that there is virtualy NO runout on the outside of the barrel when turned between centers doing the brake. Nearly all barrels have some runout/warpage. But yours is one of the straightest I have seen. Chalk up an Atta Boy for VVG.

You had ordered the chrome-moly barrel hand lapped from VVG. Really nice finish inside the
Shilen barrel.

I have to pick up my puter this afternoon. Turned out it WAS just a virus that came with the Graybeard "stink bait" in the subject line. I had not been keeping the Norton updates up to date, or it should have caught it. Don't recall the name of the virus, but it is apparently common.

Should be able to cut your .375x.338 Win. Mag. chamber this afternoon or evening. It's a comin.'

Thanks a bunch Mike. I was wondering if it was much different trying to machine a brake into an octagon barrel? I figured anybody's add-on brake would probably cost a million dollars and end up looking like crap.

Some may complain about the noise from braked barrels, but I expect it to be a considerable advantage hunting a couple miles back in a cedar swamp, 'cause when I pot Bambi I don't need the slave labor hauling da meat wagon being confused as to who's shootin. They get put off real quick when they walk all the way out there in the dark and it turns out to be some crazed Yooper hunting over a pile of rotton cabbage 2 forties over...

Also, thanks to VVCG for another fine effort. I've been more than satisfied with the stuff I've gotten from them and will no doubt be ordering up again. Dave - How 'bout a .17HMR barrel in that cool looking carbon-fiber?

Also, the fact that this particular barrel took, ah, slightly longer than usual to show up will be an advantage too. The wife can't get nearly as riled when the sucker's long since been mostly paid for...

Hey Mike,

I tried to call off the hit man via email, but I got one of those "undeliverable" messages back - said something about a virus or pond-scum or something like that...

Mark,
I sent the pix of the brake to 1buba today. Maybe he'll have time to find a place for them.

Furball, I mean Fireball......the Klez virus, according to the local gurus, is one that propagates itself via your address book. It is possible that I passed it on, even. So, repeating what I was told, do your updates daily before downloading email, rectally painful as it may be.

Stink bait. Gets the big ones, I tell ya.

Folks -
This virus thing is ugly. The worlds #1 computer chip company (who writes my check) has had some problem w/ Klez. Do EVERYTHING you can including Windows and Office security patches. But do keep in mind, that when even the big companies with security staffs have problems, you will too.
I can go on and on with this, used to work the virus outbreaks, but I won't. It's in the same class as going to a race to see a wreck.

Oh yeah - pic will go up today.
