GUNS AND AMMO- DECEMBER 1985

While looking up some info on a 338-06 I came across a article by Bob Milek
"Get Top Performance From your Contender" yep good stuff, tells how to clean up the action, How to size cases so that the shoulders are not being blown forward and how to check that you do not have it to far forward...

It even talks about a guy that way back in 1985 was making a oversize hinge pin for the Contender seems like the fella was the only one suppling them back then. They were from a Dennis M. Bellm
Gunsmithing Inc. out of Salt Lake City, UT

This artical came out about the time I got my first Contender. I still don't know why I waited this long to order the oversize Hinge Pins.

It is good to know that Mike has been at this T/C thing for a while. [Smile]

Ok - hate to do this, but any chance of a scan of the article? Is that long enough back that copyrights aren't an issue?

Sorry for the ignorance - in this an MANY other areas.

I can scan it for you and send a copy via snail mail if needed. Not sure how long it would take to send over e-mail. It is a good artical and we might get Mike to review it and give additional input.

The pages are a little yellow due to age but still very clear.

I am not sure about the copyrights on it but it is now over 16 years old. Does not seem like it would be a problem.
Any ideas from the group???

I thought it was great to see Mike's product being endorsed over 16 years ago. Back when Mike was still a young Gunsmith.

Cool. If it doesn't look like it would be an issue w/ Copyright just send it email (if you can bear it). I'm either on the LAN or via DSL so it's no concern to me.

Thanks,
steve

Will forward to those who send a request to steve@1cox.com. If I can verify the copyright thing, I would even post on my website. I'm no sure Dennis would want it on Mike's site. <VBG>

Imagine that. Since before 1985 I've been promoting something that might void your warranty by making barrels fit right.

Dennis & Mike won't mind. [Wink]
(Still don't like the name Dennis) A phone call to Peterson Pub. would get an answer ref. the copyright issue. Normally if they are credited as being the source, and the material is not being resold, it is good advertising/PR to have their material reprinted.

Sure hated to see Bob "leave the range." He was one of the best and most sane of the TC aficionados writing about Contenders. Good man.

I find it interesting that as sharp as Bob was on Contenders, there are still things that escaped him, or rather, there were still things waiting to be discovered about them over time and with more indepth experience. I'd like to see again how he handled the shoulder location/case sizing issue.

But hey. Graybeard the Great knows more than Bob Milek ever did, so let's all head over to GBO. [Big Grin] He'll tell us cases don't need to have the shoulders pushed back, right?

One of the real heartbreaking disappointments for me was when I handed a stack of at least a dozen Peterson Publishing magazines with articles by Bob about my work to someone wanting to make some money copying the articles for me for reprinting, and then they never came back. I really do wish I still had all the articles. I had a lot of respect for Bob. Fine gentleman if ever there was one, and I do miss his writing.

This brings up an interesting opportunity.
Why doesn't someone (with copyright issues legally worked out) or the companies themselves start putting out articles or complete (past) issues in computer format.
A CD of 357 Mag articles or Contender or mixes of whatever. I would prefer themes rather than whole issues on a CD personally.
Once the articles were scanned (newer ones are likely to be in a computer format already) then future calls for the CD could be profitable. One could actually set up a library and have them downloadable. Imagine a compilation of all of the TC articles on one CD . . . ok, maybe a couple!
Just a slightly off topic thought!

Mike,
I might be able to replace at least one out of the dozen that was lost. Dec 95 sound like one?

I am having some trouble scanning it and will try to get with a friend this week to get the copy up for the site.

Look for a treat in the mail soon! [Smile]

Bob was writing me up often in the mid to late 80s. I don't recall now when he died. Dec. 95 would not be one of the issues I lost, but if it has something on me, I'd like to see it anyway.

Thanks...

Mike

e-mail you to get the price on 10+ hinge pins as I have many people asking about those now!

I still have not been able to get this artical scanned. I have made copies which are very clear.
I could fax it or snail mail the artical or if need be the magazine to you direct. Just so long as we get it to Mike.

Mike Bellm, error in previous post it is a Dec. 1985 artical not a 95!

OK, cOPY OF ARTICAL HAS BEEN SENT VIA PRIORITY TO 1buba. Original issue is in route to Grants Pass.

If the copy is not clear enough you will have to see if Mike will let go of it so you can scan the real thing.

No scanning was done here so hold the e-mails till it is put out on one of the sites.

Thanks Ken

click on each page to view it full size. You may just want to do a right click and save each to your harddrive.

For those of you who want it via email, please send me an email again. I don't want to hang up your email account if it isn't needed. I haven't had time to optimize the files yet and they are a weeeeee bit large.

Has anyone heard from/about Bob Milek Jr. I understand he's suppose to be quite a handgunner himself. I've seen and read a couple of his articles and they were pretty good.

Mike, which articles are you missing? Bob Milek was one of my favorite editors. I have a bunch of his magazine articles saved. Let me know which ones and I'll try and see if I have them.

My pleasure, I'm tearing mine down now to do a complete polish on the stainless steel and do the action job at the same time.

I do have Mike's Wyoming stones and EZELAP so away we go. A slick action and a shiney frame what fun!

I don't have a clue now which articles or issues. There were quite a few of them. Any and all would be appreciated.

Thanks, Mike
