Well, it may not be long range to some, but a coyote at 280 yards is "waaay out there" in my books. Unfortunately for the coyote, I spotted him on the prowl this morning near the 300 yard berm of my target range, so I didn't have a problem estimating the distance. And with the 6x45 sighted in at 200 yards, I only had to deal with minimal (around 8") drop.
Anyway, I noticed him as I was about to feed the chickens and was able to grab my 15" 6x45 Contender from the house (hadn't put it up after using it yesterday). Used my rolled up jacket atop a fence post for a rest. The 80 grain Sierra Single Shot Pistol bullet, propelled by 26 grains of BenchMark at 2700 fps, took him through both shoulers and dropped him on the spot. The exit was the size of a quarter.
I didn't have time to grab plugs or muffs, and the ears are really ringing now...
The male coyote weighed 41 pounds and was app. 3 years old.

I've been trying to call in and kill a coyote with a handgun for some time now and it never seems to come together........did call and kill one with a crossbow a few weeks ago......

Bobby, Why in the world were you shooting at "cow oaks" at 280 yards away??? A cow oak has never been know to attack a chicken! Nevertheless, it's good to know your shooting is better than your hearing! Gary T.

I haven't connected with my new 6mm T/CU YET, but have taken a couple with a .243 Savage Striker I had. It really is a hoot Calling in a Coyote and then finishing the job with ones favorite handgun.
Just a week ago I went out with my Cousin and his Son. We set up down in a pasture in a dried up lake bottom. Paul and his Son were set up about 125 yards northwest of me on the banks of a stock dam. I was on the bank of a different stock dam, and the wind was blowing kind of between us at an angle away from Paul and his Son. On my second series of screams I heard the shot, then another, then all was silent. After a short time Paul and his Son came to where I was waiting for them with a huge male coyote in tow, and huge smiles on their faces. This was the first time Paul's Son had had a Coyote called in for him, nad to say he was excited would be an understatement. Nope I didn't get to take one with my Handgun, but I was just as happy with the results.
Thanks, guys. Ironically, for the past couple of weeks I have wanted to do some calling, but the conditions were never right -- or if they were, my schedule had me working. But getting lucky like this morning is something I certainly don't mind...

JSH- Yep.....one and the same. Virgin Valley just elects to stamp it the metric 6x45 instead of 6mm-.223 (less stampwork, right Dave <grin>?).
By the way, this coyote died at the hands of those Sierra "seconds" you picked up for me. I honestly can't tell any difference between these and the "primo" stuff in the green box. Ditto for the 7mm, 130 grain SSPs. On the range and in the field, the seconds deliver the performance I demand. All I had to do was clip the excess wire on some of the tips.
Going back to Sedalia any time soon???

bobby, You caught me. The 6mmx45 is my way of saving time. This is so I have time to do things like track packages for Jules. (he gonna get me for that one.) Dave
Well, Dave, I have good news and bad new for you guys: Jules will be spending more money with VV, but I hear (from a reputable source, of course!) that he is packing up and moving next door to your shop so he can stop pestering you about checking packages. This way, he'll just wait in your front office for personal delivery <grin>

Me too, I probably enjoy the calling as much or more than the killing. Every single time I go out calling I learn how much more there is to learn about Coyotes. I truly enjoy howling them up.
In a few days I hope to give my new Electronic Caller a test run. I have been working on this caller for so long, some days it seems like forever. It is an MP3 Based Caller, and will have 14 different tracks on it for now.
