Is this case small enough in the base and diam to be considered for a chambering in a contender barrel. A 6X224 would seem good

tommyn,
The base diameter of the .224 Weath. is essentially the same as a .30/30 or .225 Win. It is a strong case, and as a reload only 6mm proposition, it would be ok to do.

However, you are back to the custom dies problem/costs. Between the .224 Weath. case and the .225 Win. case without the useless belt to contend with jumping the extractor, I lean toward the .225 case, myself.

I have done one experimental .224 Weath. barrel, but will not do it for the general public due to the pressure from factory ammo being way too high for Contenders.

What was interesting was the end result of the experiment..... loaded to max the Contender could handle, the .224 Weath. was little if any faster than a standard .223 Rem. and did not do as well as the .222 Rem. Mag. Imp, which, btw, holds very little less powder than what can be used in the .224 Weath. and .225 Win. cases.

Back to the .222 Rem. Mag. Imp. case, it has the advantage of using 6mm TCU dies which are less expensive and more readily available than the .224 Weath and .225 Win based wildcats.

But for the record, you come up with the dies, and I can cut the chamber.

Just a idea Mike I'm still wanting you to rechamber a 17HMR to 17Ak Hornet when you start that kind of work again.
