Finished up a concealed carry class today and one of my students brought along his 300 Ultra Mag Encore for me to try........I fired it a couple of times just to see how the recoil was, not really any worse than my ported 375 JDJ and the Ultra Mag doesn't have a brake. It is a 15" VVCG heavy fluted stainless barrel with a Burris 3X12 scope. I can't wait to shoot it at long range......the owner shoots pop cans at 600 yards!!!

Mark,

What is your friend using for a rest for this Encore? Sounds neat [Big Grin]

That sounds FUN [Big Grin] I have found that ported barrels seem to come back at your noodle more than non-ported.I have a Super-14 .444Marlin in a Contender that is non-ported and it just goes up in the air.My 15" factory '06 is also non-ported too.Recoil is not that bad.I have been woundering how a 300 H&H mag would be in a bull barrel.

I don't know what he uses for long range work.....we were on a very short pistol range and just fired it off hand to see what it was like....I say we.....my wife wanted to shoot it....she likes the big boomers too!

The owner and I talked about meeting at my gun club to shoot on the 600 yard range......hope it works out, it would be a blast! [Big Grin]

Gonhunting,

You didn't mean the short action ultra mag did you? What kind of velocity can you get out of a 15 inch barrel with all that powder? Is it actually any faster than a 30-06?

Just curious!

Nope....this was a sure enough 300 Ultra, not the short version! The owner says he gets over 3000 fps with 180 grain bullets. I believe he said he was using around 96 grains of Reloader 25.

Gonhunting,

I have an Encore factory barrel that was a 7mm-08 that I had rechambered to 7mm RUM. I had a Holland "Quick Discharge" muzzle brake installed on the little beast.

I am curious what kind of brass life your friend is getting with his 300 Ultra. My 7mm Ultra will have case head seperation after three firings because of the large amount of bolt thrust flexing the action and allowing the case to stretch.

I also have a 7.21 Tomahawk barrel built on a Lilja 15" barrel by Virgin Valley that does the same thing with its cases but to a slightly worse degree.

I think I may have a problem with my Encore frame being out of square with the bore because I hear all these shooters saying they use the RUM rounds in the Encore with complete success.

Sounds like to me your friend is running right at max loads which I would not feel comfortable doing with the Encore.

Anyway, just wondering if he has had his barrel long enough to know what case life will be like. He may want to check for case head seperation to see if he is having the same problem.

Because of my problems with the Encore, I have decided to build all my high intensity handguns on the XP-100 action.

My latest XP-100 is chambered for the 338 WSM and it produces 2950 fps with the 180 gr Ballistic Tip using only 69.0 gr RL-15.

Good Shooting!!!

Having read about your problems with case life, that was one of the first things I asked him.... he said he is getting 3 to 5 loadings before the brass is discarded.

On a side note, he mentioned that he had a 7-08 barrel rechambered to 280 JDJ and that he did not like the results......the barrel was not accurate.
