30 Carbine Barrel question

A few months ago I aquired a T/C Factory ten inch 30 Carbine/M-1 barrel.

I have been trying to figure out if I want to reload this cartrige or not. I have this barrel and an M-1 Carbine to shoot my reloads in...but it's kind of a limited use deal.

Any thoughts. I got the barrel thinking it would be used as I reloaded for my Carbine, but with surplus ammo...I'm having second thoughts and may just sell the barrel and use the proceeds to upgrage my reloading bench.

Thanks

Bob

I like to have an Encore barrel in the same calibers as my semiautos for working up loads. I'm able to tell more about accuracy with a scoped rifle than an open sighted military one. You didn't say whether or not your barrel was scopped; if not, I would unload it. The fact that it's only a 10 inch barrel would also, in my opinion, limit its usefulness in working up 30 Carbine loads.

I, however, have never been impressed enough with the 30 Carbine cartridge to ever seriously consider buying a gun/barrel that shoots it. I guess it can be accurate in the right gun but I think the power leaves something to be desired. If I'm going to shoot .30 caliber bullets, I want something with a little more steam.

Bob, I will say right off the bat that I don't have the 30 carbine. I do have a couple of pistols chambered in 30-20, aka 32-20.
I know a couple of guys that have the 30 carbine round in TC's and they are perfectly happy with them. They will both shoot right at 1" at 100m with a scope and bags. I wouldn't really compare the M1 to a TC. You can get the TC to handle heavy bullets as long as the throat is long enough, which is pretty much a given in a factory TC barrel. When I say heavy I am talking 165 grainers+. There is some load data around from a few guys that I trust.
The one gent above refered to "steam". You should be able to get pretty close to the 300 whisper speeds out of the 30carbine in the TC. BY NO MEANS WOULD I USE THEM IN THE M1!
I know little or nothing about the M1, other than my dad having had a real dislike for them.
When I was first interested in small case 30's it was on the list. But, a rimmed case is more user friendly in a TC. Case capcity for me to shoot up to a 200 grain bullet was also not there.
I am going to take a SWAG at this, but velocity loss in the TC and the M1 should be minimal as to my thoughts. It operates with pistol powders. The one and only variance would be your OAL. I would say to pay close attention to the chrono in load development and you should be good on the M1.
AA#9 and WC820 is my favorite powder in the 30-20. I have also worked up a load using bullseye, I doubt the bullet would exit the M1 but is a blast to shoot in the TC.
I may suggest that you look at some 32 mag data and go from there.
Jeff

Good stuff! Thank you for taking time to reply!
I'm going to consider this information and other info. as I try to "justify" gearing up to reload 30 carbine.

Let me know if you want to sell the barrel. We have a bowling pin shoot at 200 yards where you can only use straight wall cartridges. If it could shoot well enough it would be a good bowling pin barrel!
