I purchased a 20" Katahdin brl last week. I would like to know what bullet/weight/vel to use on feral hogs and deer at close range/under 100 yards. Thanks...

About the lightest bullet you could get for the 460 S&W would be 200 grains. They would work fine and anything heavier would work fine as well on hogs.

I would probably use the 200 grain bullet and push it as fast as possible while maintaining good accuracy. With heavier bullets, the same would apply; the heaviest loads possible while maintaining good accuracy and safe pressures.

I would use a bullet from 240gr to 300gr I don't believe you will get the punch you are looking for with a light bullet. Further more if you want fast and light why not use the factory ammo with the SST bullets. Also you might get a lot of muzzle flip since your barrel is not ported I hope you can prove me wrong. Have you found a Red Dot type pistol that will withstand the recoil of a 460. I am still looking for something to use on my 454 Raging Bull with 240 to 250 grain condom bullets.

BTW how is your new Grandbabby doing? You can send me a pic to fun4dad@yahoo.com I am sure the wife and my mother would like to see it also. Give me a buzz when you get time.

Check with Hornaday,Hodgdon & Cast Performance for bullets and reloading data. Reloading data from Hornaday is available using their 200gr SST,(I haven't seen that particular bullet anywhere as yet) 240gr & 300 xtp mag bullets.

http://www.castperformance.com has a several cast bullets for the S&W 460 with load data . I got my rechambered 454 casull Bullberry 20" rifle barrel back but Dillon hasn't got their 460 powder funnel for the RL550B so I can't load any. I have to wait about 5 weeks til the replaced lens in my left eye completely heals before I can shoot any weapons .

A Speer tech told me only use their 300 grain heavy jacketed bullet not their 240gr as the jacket isn't heavy enough and will shed in the barrel.Check with the bullet maker before loading any for the 460 to make sure they'll remain intact.

The Encore 460 Mag pistol barrel I had worked great with 240 to 300 gr. bullets. I reload the 240 gr. Hornady XTP, 260 gr. Nosler Partitions and 300 gr. cast bullets.

cast Performance has a 395gr gas checked bullet that's supposed to be very accurate according to the Brosts who sent some to hornaday and they were more accurate than hornaday bullets the Brosts told me at the SHOT Show.

I have not reloaded the 395 gr. bullets in my 460, I still want to put them out at a fast rate.

They move out fast enough the weight of the bullet will do the damage.I had a friend who always loaded everything over max but I prefer accuracy to max speed.

I go for accuracy over speed.

I finally tried this 460 mag today: my load was 45 grs. H110 under hornady 240 gr xtp/mag. My groups were ok. First and second shot together, third shot was about 2" off to left. The recoil is a little excessive. My son n law found this out when the scope hit him above his left eye. This barrel is better suited as a rifle barrel, not a pistol barrel. But I will use it as a pistol barrel for this year.

I used data published by hodgdon. 45 grs of h110 with a 240 gr xtp/mag is listed at 2084 fps in a 10 3/8" barrel. I have used this data for my Smith & wesson 460 revolver. It's a excellent load for my intented use. To Kill feral hogs and deer. When other data is released,"printed in black and white", I may try it. Until then, i'll use Hodgdon data.

Yesterday I contacted Sierra regarding using their 45 cal bullets in my 460 I was told they haven't worked up any load data and DON"T USE ANY OF THEIR BULLETS IN THE SW 460 AS THEY WILL SHED THE JACKETS BLOCKING THE BARREL.

While your info may be helpfull bob300wsm is only refering to his experience with 240 gr xtp/mag.

Please do not type in all capital letters it is considered shouting.

scr83jp:

If you read the bob300wsm original post he is asking for bullet/weight/vel to use on feral hogs and deer at close range/under 100 yards he can use. Not something that will be dangerous when fired through his pistol/rifle barrel at 460 velocities.
