I wanted to see if it was safe to chamber a 250 savage in a contender barrel. The pressuer would be 45,000 or less.I was also wondering who will do a custom chambering in this round? Its not listed on Fox River or Brown barrels? Its less pressure than the 375 win.I saw a 356 win barrel in contender also.

The .250 IMP is a much better option. You simply stick to STANDARD .250 Savage data, and the increased capacity translates into lowered (thus, safe) pressures. And the minimal body taper of the IMP's case configuration lends itself to more acceptable levels of backthrust. If you are not careful, the standard .250 case can get you into the red zone in a hurry.

Also, cases formed from the .307 Win are sturdier and seem to work much better in the Contender -- and the rim really simplifies things as well.

Lastly, there's enough .225 Win brass out there, and the supply will not dry up. I recently traded off something like 51 bags of 50 rounds each of new .225 brass. With all the JDJ shooters out there, rest assured the .225 brass will be available for a long, long time.

SSK will chamber it for the contender. I have one and it is a great fun shooter. Think when you are loading for it and you will be ok. It is my favorite fox hunting handgun. I have also taken deer with it and the 85gr nosler BT lung shots only, and the now discontuned barns X both the 75 and 85gr bullets. These are the best hunting bullets for this gun/chambering in my thinking. 2600fps is safe and possible with this range of bullets. In my gun 100gr or more bullets will not stabelize properly for long range shooting. The 257JDJ would be very simular in performance, and would have the rim of the 225 brass. But, the 250 savage is just plain cool to have.

I already have 250 savage dies brass and bullets.I will do a carbine barrel probally 22" or 24".I had a savage 99 in it but it would not shoot 120 grain. It probally needs 1in 10 inch twist or faster then .My savage had 1 in 14" twist. It like 100 gr or less but shot 120 gr remington bullets sideways.

I have a barrel waiting at David White's shop for a new reamer he ordered for the 250IMP based on the 307 case. The barrel is currently a 15" 256Mag. I'm having one of his Maximizer Brakes installed too.

David told me he could explode water filled milk jugs at 600 yards until he got tired of doing it. Sounds like fun to me! I hope I'm that good of a shot with it.

The 307 Winchester case is a heavy sturdy case. Much sturdier than the 250 Savage case.

I've got a 15" SSK 7mm #2 based on that case, and one of David's Maximizer Muzzle Brakes. The first time I took it to the range, it caused a large gathering of people wanting to find out what the noise was, including the range officers. I noticed later when my buddy was shooting it that it was throwing out a football sized ball of flame, in broad daylight!! Extremely accurate too!

I have a 6.5X50 that I would sell, but I would NOT recommend this chambering in the Contender.

I think the 250 Savage AI is a much better choice and will serve you better on all issues other than bullet weight selection, but I think the 25 caliber bullets available will serve MOST of a persons needs!

dgr416,
According to their websites, neither Bullberry nor VVCG chamber Contender barrels in 250 Savage nor the AI version. SSK previously chambered Contender barrels in both the 250 Savage and AI versions, but when I put this question to JD a few years ago, he said they no longer do so. I had to buy an Encore barrel in 250 Savage to fix my craving for one. Later also found a 257 JDJ Contender barrel I just couldn't do without. I've always thought a 25 cal bullet in a 222 Rem Mag AI case would make for an interesting combination. Gary T.

Here is a little more information from the Bellm web site. I forgot to mention that the 250 Ackley Improved can be used in the 250IMP barrel if you change the extractor to one for the 35 Remington.

I did a Contender in .257 Dart and it worked fine (a .257 Dart is a .25 caliber on a shortened Swift case.....almost identical to the decades old .250 Savage). There's an article on my website to include a comparison to the .250-3000 and load data.

Gary T- Need to find copy of Handloader from about 1980. Two articles (rifle and T/C) done by the creator of "Load from a Disk". Called the 25/222mg the 6.35 X47. Had lots of data.
