OK guys getting ready to order an HS Precision varmint model pistol in 260 rem. Going with a 15" tube and a stock in Spruce with black spiderweb. Any advice or things I should consider regarding this pistol? Planning to order on my Thursday morning, your Wednesday afternoon (I'm currently stationed overseas) and hope to be able to pick it up next Sept or Oct. Thanks.

Alan: Sence you mentioned hunting elk, have you given any consideration to the 6.5 x 284? It will still hunt varmints and you can always load it down for less recoil and velocity if you want to. It is now being produced by Norma and Hornady, so it is a factory round with brass available from at least three different sources. 260 Rem rifle ballistics out of a 15 inch pistol barrel is nothing to sneeze at...Rusty

Rusty,

HS does not chamber for the 6.5x284 or I would probably order it. No doubt the extra zip would come in handy! Alan

Get the 7mm-08 or the 308 Win if you are going to elk hunt with it. Wink

Here is a pic of my new HS Precision 284 Win. It is topped with a Burris 3x12 BP mounted on a Davidson base in Kelby rings.

Thanks, only took 11 months 2 weeks to get it, and still waiting on 2 more that were ordered at the same time.

I wish it was a 20moa base, I can't find one made for the xp's.

Have you asked HERE?!?!?!? I bet they may be able to help you stretch that .284 Win farther out there!!! wave

BTW, If you weren't into "pretty" you could go with Burris Signature ZEE-Rings on your base. They use INSERTS where you can gain up to 20 MOA when using the factory "0" offset up front. My self-built VZ-24 Mauser in .35 Whelen needed them, but I used the 10 MOA inserts in the rear, for a 300 yard zero (I milled a bit too much off the rear web shame) . They really work! JFYI, here's the rings. thumb

Bill,
Richard Near (Near Manufacturing) # 866-608-2441 and Ken Farrel (have to look up his number) makes 20 MOA bases for the XP-100 which is the same as H-S (at least that is what Dave or Todd told me).

I have the Burris Sig. rings on my other long range xp. I just happen to have the Davidson base and rings laying around so decided to use them. The scope mounting holes are 8-40 on my HS instead of the normal 6-48, so I had to modify the Davidson base to accept the larger screws.

Ernie, I looked at the Farrell bases, but at $100+ that is alittle more than I want to spend right now. If I need to stretch the distance alittle more, I can always use my other xp. I have included a pic of it. It is a 6.5-284, 17.75" Broughton 5c 1-8 twist barrel, HS Precision varmint stock, Burris 3x12 BP.

Woodsracer, Yes I do live in East TN, born and raised here.

I live in Piney Flats, just outside of Johnson City, so you are not that far away. I was through Cookeville around Thanksgiving. If I am down that way again, will have to look you up.
