I can't stop looking at the X Frame 500 S&W Revolvers on Gunbroker. It's becoming an obsession. I've owned a couple of Encore barrels chambered for same and have fired one with several different loads. They're OK but I sold them and what I REALLY can't get off my mind are those dang X Frames. I held one in my hand at the Shot Show in Orlando the year they introduced them and I just know back then I HAD to HAVE one. I have a friend near here that let me shoot his 4" model with the removeable brake and I completely fell in love. That's the one I want. I don't imagine that it'd be very practical but taking a moose and an elk could be a lot of fun. One day a brown bear or even a Cape Buff would be the final shot and I imagine I'd retire the dang thing before it destroyed all the cartlidge in my right arm... I have three S&W revolvers now that are all used for target work and hunting. They all have 6" barrels. They're a 66, 657, and 629. All wear the Hogue finger groove grips and none have scopes. (I don't scope revolvers or my Glocks... Only single shots.) These revolvers need a bruiser of a big brother I think... Am I KRAZEE??? Anyway... I think that I've put it off long enough and that I'll start looking for one for a Christmas present for myself. Am I the only one??? It's spelled O B S E S S I O N!!! $bob$

They look like fun to me. I'd be interested to know how accurate they are, and standard deviation on ammo fps for various loads.

Sean, I guess I should have put this in the handgun hunting section. The one I shot was as accurate as any revolver I've shot. I'm pretty sure he's never chronoed the loads but I'll ask him. It's not nearly as punishing to shoot as I imagined. About like a 44mag revolver with full house loads. I guess the weight of that X Frame and the muzzle brake work pretty well. We didn't shoot any reduced loads. $bob$

I think the 500 S&W revolver is VERY nice but I would probably go for a 460 S&W for its flatter trajectory if I were in the hunting revolver market. Make sure your selected barrel length is legal where you intend to hunt. In Ohio a handgun for deer hunting requires at least a 5 inch barrel. Actually, compared to an unbraked 44 Mag. Ruger Redhawk, I think the 500 S&W recoil is a lot easier on the hands. The S&W grips probably help in this regard.

Grumulkin, Since I don't scope my revolvers the flatter trajectory isn't an issue with me. I'd also like to have a 460V but the 500 is my first priority. Also... Here in the Sunshine State there's no barrel limit length. I don't know about New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, or Alaska though and that's where I'd likely do most of my hunting with it. $bob$
