I know that some of you have used this powder in the straight walls and am curious of your results. I purchased a pound today to try in the 41mag and the 414. Any loads you can recommend?

Mike,

I use 22.5 gr. with a standard primer and 210 gr. Hornady XTP in my Contender .41 Mag. 16". I think it is accurate and maxes out the bullet for velocity in this barrel. I believe, but am not certain, that this gets 1800 or 1850 fps or so. I've misplaced my notes! Now I'll have to go back to the range with the chronograph. Anyhoo, that's factory .35 Rem performance, at least at the muzzle!

mike - check out your database for Lil'Gun w/ Hornady Hp/XTP. That data is from Project 41.

Mike,

I've got to verify those velocity figures. I believe I remember and I have quoted that elsewhere but without my notes I'm not sure.

Usually, I look in the manuals for top velocity for a particular bullet weight at minimum pressure levels. L'il Gun filled the bill. Velocities are up there if you look at the trajectory. No hold over or under out to 150 for deer sized animals. Makes my little .41 carbine (5 lbs all up), great for climbing the local hills AND actually shooting something. I like the performance of the XTPs too.

You'll remember that a while back there was talk of the heavy bullet .41 loads. After much examination I decided against the heavy bullet loads. This bullet and powder combo seems ideal for my use.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I am loading 21.0 of lil Gun with the 210 Sierras & Fed LPP. The veloctiy is at 1558 fps ave. I could have gone further up the loading scale but was happy with that. I think the target is still posted on my 41 mag OTT post.

Hobie - That's interesting that the Lil'Gun worked well for you. I loaded a ramp of Lil'Gun w/ 210 grn XTP's and really didn't care for it. It did print higher velocities, but the accuracy left little to desire. (best 5 shot group went 1.73" @100). I'm partial right now to Unique in Project 41. Light recoil, low usage (9.8 grains vs. 19+ grns.),and great accuracy (1.07" & .93" 5 shot groups @ 100 - before fine tuning - this was with bare bones load ramps).Velocities are lower then I'd like - 1400fps at 6ft. I'm concerned I won't maintain the minimum 1000fps at 100 yards Hornady wants for expansion of the XTP's.

I'm working on a load ramp with Blue Dot for this weekend, then I'm done for this year. I'm cutting this too close to PA deer season, I'll put something together for hunting, and continue load development after the season.

I get 1.5" at 100 yards in what I called sitting supported. A field postion. This is average for the Contender carbine system, IME. Maybe I'm just not as good a shot as some others... [Wink] I believe it would do better if properly shot from the bench. However, I see a difference in POI for the 2 positions (me again [Roll Eyes] ), so I just test as I do.

So, to me, the accuracy does indeed leave nothing to be desired. It is wonderful and I can, from all positions, hit a pie plate without hold over or under to 150 yards. This is great for a 5lb carbine that will hit has hard as the .41 Mag AND it doesn't recoil too bad.

I have to tell you also, that I'm using that cursed Simmons "Turkey" scope on this gun. A 4x, I was not enamored of it. However, the little diamond is useful for ranging AND holdover at longer ranges. I don't see using this on game at 200 yards or more, but will essay a shot at coyote or groundhog.

I also use L'il Gun in the .22 Hornet and .218 Bee with great satisfaction. Unfortunately, only the Hornet has taken a whistle pig this summer, I've been packing the 10mm Auto Carbine all summer. Wonder if L'il Gun is applicable to the 10mm Auto cartridge... [Wink] [Big Grin]

Glad a bet didn't come out of our differences! [Big Grin]
Did you ever do anything with Speer's 200 grain bullet?

Mike,
I am loading 23gr of Lil Gun in my 414SM behind Lead Heads 270 grainer. Haven't clocked it yet, but from the books, velocity should be in the 1650 range, perhaps more. Recoil was enough to rip the screw outa the block on my Pachmyar forend. I will next be trying it in the DW 41Mag project gun.

This is a Contender barrel? What is the barrel length?

Thanks,

Yes, this is a 14" Contender. A 10" Dan Wesson does about 1500 with the same bullet.

Mr. DW,

How are you? I still love those LeadHeads! I remember you getting a new job, too. How's that working out for you?

We had a discussion about a year ago on use of L'ilGun in the .357 Max. Do you remember that? I think you said you were going to try it in the .360 DW. Did you get a chance to?

I've been thinking of moving to this powder in the .44 Rem Mag with the 240 XTPs to be used in both the 4" M629 and in the carbine. I'd also like find something that will get me more velocity in the Max, not a lot just a little. H110/W296 does not do it for me and I can't find any 1680.

Hobie,
If you can find any WC680, it was the velocity king in the max. 1680 is good but not as good. I am not a fan of the ball powder twins in the max, never had good luck with it in wheelguns or single shots. I haven't tried Lil Gun in the 360 yet. I have semi retired the gun, perhaps to standing shooting since I am developing the 741 SRS-1 V10S in cast for DW at the moment.
For the 360, N110 has proven to be the accuracy champ, 1.12"/100 & 6.5"/300 yards. meters, but H110 should give similar results. Ideally Lil GUn should be good but until after the state championships next week, I'm not messing around!
The 741 is rapidly becoming equal to the 7360. Under 4" at 200 meters so far.

The job is great, Procurement Quality Enginer for Honeywell Aerospace. Great company!
Take care,
Mr. DW
