My forend on my contender carbine does not just glide on my .22 hornet barrel, like it does my .22 mag. barrel. It goes on with a SNAP and some decent force, which I know is to tight. Should I sand the channel on the forend to make it larger? Or will this make it too loose for the other barrels? Is there another fix to this problem without spending any money?
Richard.

Supermag....I sand ALL my TC forends to get a loose fit. It fixes most of the problem related to free floating a barrel. Not quite as good I guess, but if you sand it to where it does not touch on the sides your groups will shrink and after that the addition of a hanger bar will not help that much..its kinda like a Poormans Free floater. All the stuff about hanger bars...And I have them....they are just NOT MUCH BETTER than a loose fitting forend from the factory.
Dont get me wrong I love my Bullberry wood and hanger systems....But they just don work much better.

Fireball.....OK here comes the flak [Big Grin]

I had a Virgin Valley barrel that a Pachmayr forend adapter wounldn't fit on. The studs it attached to were to far apart. I sent it in to Virgin Valley with the adapter and when it returned the adapter was on the barrel. Looks like some metal was removed on the adapter bar to make it fit, but they said the studs were with in specs. I found that kinda funny since non of my other adapters would go on the barre either. [Confused] The Pachmayr adapters fit just fine on my factory TC and SSK barrels.

HOW DOES IT SHOOT?

I have had a few barrels that shot much better with full length bedded forends , then they did with "free floated"* forends.

*As free as you can get on a T/C anyway. [Smile]

JD,

That has happened to me also with a couple of Bullberry barrels.

I simply drilled the recessed holes in the hanger bar that fit over the studs to the next drill size in a drill press.

Worked well.

Also had this problem with some plated barrels.

I know that would have been an easy fix. I also had the put the screw on at an angel when using a wood forend. I was told buy someone that it is possible that putting the screw on this way was putting some pressure on the barrel not letting it shoot to it's full potental. [Frown] I used to own a TC rechambered 30/30 Improved barrel that shot better than this custom barrel. I sold that old 30/30 to get the money for custom. Sure wish I still had it. Personally I'll be sticking with SSK from now on. [Smile]

What about the pachmayr super 14 forend? Can these be sanded also, or do I risk sanding too much and damaging a plastic skeleton under the rubber?
Richard.
