Ok, so the little red plastic tipped bullet (V-MAX) is the replacement for the 7mm SSP bullet. Has anyone out there used one on deer sized critters out of 10" or 14" 7mm TCU? Ok how about at least on wet newsprint, phone books, or other media of your choice?

I can't imagine Hornady substituting an explosive varmint bullet for a medium game bullet. Are you sure you don't meand the SST? $bob$

When the V-Max first came out, I contacted Hornady and asked what type of performance could be expected on deer-sized game at 2300-2400 fps MV. The tech told me "now way...don't try it." Then I tested them for myself, and sure enough, the jackets break up in test medium -- almost as if they were brittle -- although this is caused by the taper and thickness of the jacket more than anything. Now, however, Hornady is saying the 120 grain V-Max is just the ticket for the 7TCU, etc., for deer. Has the bullet undergone a significant change? I can't say as I haven't tried any of them as of late. But the conflicting information doesn't really surprise me as there has been tons of misinformation coming from Hornady as of late. In the 2nd to last manual, they show the optimum starting velocity of the 120 grain 7mm SSP as 2600-3500 fps. What 7 TCU gets that kind of velocity??? When I queried about it, a Steve there told me it was done to avoid confusion. Yea, right... They also claimed to have fired the 7 BR data in a Contender. When I inquired, Steve argued with me and basically called me an idiot -- that I had "no idea" what I was talking about. Now, the new manual shows the data to have been recorded in and Encore. Hornady also claims the 6.5-06 is an improved cartridge. SO what that that make the 6.5-06 Improved??? I could go on, but I'd be here forever. Hornady makes some excellent bullets, but they need someone with actual firearms knowledge to edit their publications. Granted, everyone makes mistakes. But the proliferation of errors in that particular manual is inexcusable.

Thanx Rich, I Had forgotten all about that thread. I guess I will load up a batch and see haw fast I can get them moving and then test . . . hedge apples are everywhere right now. Oh Hornaday .458 300 hp at 1565 fps will split a hedgeapple in several pieces and open to about 7/8th". OK, a few more than several!

Louis I remember that thread going on, I wonder if Bobby Tomek ever did that ballistic testing he was talking about?? I personally wouldn't trust it too much without a good test being done. The last response in that thread was encouraging though.

Rich-I never got around to that testing. We have twins that turn 11 months old in a week, and after nearly 4 months of hospital time, things are finally getting back to normal around here. But that is certainly something on my list of "to do" items.

LOL!!! Bobby. The family is first priority of course! I was just wondering if you did in fact do the testing, you might have already had it done & just didn't get a chance to report you findings. You & a couple of others on this board & speciality pistols are the only guys I trust for this kind of stuff. I know if you did the testing & tell me it is good to go, I don't have any woories. I should have tested them my self since I had all summer to get it done. Somehow I totally forgot about it until Louis put up this post.
