Well,I got a good deal on a new 26" 300Mag barrel....Now I'm thinking about cutting it down to 18" or 16 1/2" not sure.I did shoot it as a 26" pistol just to see how much it would recoil. It was not that bad.Now should I cut it or not.

Go for it! I love long barrel handguns after shooting Don Bower's 20" 30 Alaskan. I would be curioius how much velocity increase you would have over a 15".

Geeze, that is a tough one. I guess it all depends on what you are gonna use it for. If you wanna hunt with it as a handgun, somewhere in the 16-17" range would be nice. 16" still gives you the opportunity to shoot it as a carbine.....
Whatcha gonna do with this barrel?? (other than scare nearby shooters and keep the "ear to ear" grin on your face )
I plain on hunting with it.You have a point it would be nice cut to 16" or 17"I have an 15" '06 that shoots just SWEET "Too good to be true" is what my hunting buddy says.I like being the odd ball and I think this would put me on the edge of being down right nuts as my wife would put it.

Then i think a 16.25" or 16.5" would make a nice length for the 300. Still makes the federal minimum for converting it to a carbine and not too BIG for a handgun! (unless you are listening to cas )

Might as well join me!! The big boomers sure are a lotta fun to shoot.

BTW, if you have a chrono, i would be interested in velocity numbers on that thing before and after. I really like the 300 and have been considering one!

Now I know how you got your handle. Look at it this way if it wont shoot you can use it to burn shit...like with a flame thrower. Do yourself a favor and dont shoot it at night the NRO might mistake it for a missle launch!

Glad your doing this. I thought about doing it when they first came out with the 300 Win Mag, but went with a 16 inch 338 Win Mag from Bullberry instead. Look forward to hearing the results.

Have you chrono'ed your 338 Mag? Does it have a muzzel brake? My 300 will not have a muzzel brake.I'm thinking of cutting the 300 to 16.5" and putting a Boyds laminated rifle forend to match my grip.Should look WICKED.

Chrono'ed the 26" 300Mag today... Factory Rem.180gr S.P. Corelock's clocked in at 3,081 fps.My Mod.70 bolt 26" 300Mag using the same factory 180's clocked in at 3,025 fps.My 15" '06 using 150gr Barnes XLC's clocked 2,600 fps I'm a happy camper with my '06 this is the fastest I have been able to get it and the accuracy was just under an 1" at 100 yards. The next test you guy's see is the velocity of the 16.5" 300Mag

My 338 WM did have a brake. I no longer have it. I don't think I ever chronoed it. I believe I sent all of my load data to guy I sold it to. he shot a bull moose with it the first year he had it. He has been using factory ammo. Sad thing is I can't remember his name or user name. I have been with out that barrel for about 4 or so years now. Ernie

OK,it's time I start thinking of what power of scope to put on this bad boy. #1) NO Burris scopes ....I have had bad luck with them. #2)Must have good eye relief so I don't look like this #3)Must be clear #4)Must see the cross-hairs in dense-woods. #5)I also need the scope to make 200+ yard shots My first thinking was a 4x32 scope.Or a T/C 2.5x7 lighted duplex. Hmmmmm I need more help guy's

I like the TC 2.5x7 in the lighted or non-lighted for the heavy recoil cannons. I have the non-lighted on my 309JDJ and shooting 150grn & 165grn Ballistic Tips it has kept it's zero. I have the same scope on my 45-70 super 14 and it has been through about 500 rounds with no glitches. These are the only scope I have used on my hard hitters. I use Swift on my .223, 7-30's and .22LR. I don't know if they would hold up but they have a "across the counter" life time warranty. Good luck with your choice. I like those hand cannons.

looks like you're S.O.L. BURRIS is the only handgun scope made. hehe! just kidding, but i do like em. i had a 2.5x7 tc scope several years ago that was great.
I like the Leupold 4x (and pending funds, the Leupold 2.5x-8x) for this type application. I have placed a Leupold 4x on the 444 and like it so much that i picked up a 4x for the 405.
The 4x (with the right size target) can still shoot decent groups as seen in the 444 target below.
MBM Mike has a Leupold varible, hopefully he will see this and post his thoughts on it.....

Well the barrel is at my smith's being cut to 16.5" He's also drilling and tapping another screw hole.So I can use a pistol or rifle forend.Do you guys think a 4 power scope on the 300 will be all I really need?I just plain on hunting big game 200 to 250 yards would be MAX

The 4 power Leupold is plenty magnification for shots out to 300 yards on big game. I have a 4 power Leupold and have used it past 300 yards. It is rugged, small, light and works great. xphunter

New guy here. I've got a 15" 300 winmag that was rechambered by Mr. Bellm from a 308 Hunter barrel. One of the sweetest, easiest shooting barrels I currently own. Can't give any data on longer barrel but have some limited info on the 15 incher. 150gr Silvertips are 2900+ fps 165gr Nos Bal Tips 2800 fps Have just started working up loads over the last several weeks but this definitly shows a lot of promise. My barrel wears a Bushnell 2x6 3200 Elite.I've got the same scope on a 338-06AI that has been used for the last couple of years. Clear optics, repeatable settings and a fantastic price.I also own or have owned most types of the other scopes mentioned and would not have a problem using any of them. Good luck on your new barrel. If yours is as much fun as mine you will love it.

You will not be disappointed. I have used the 4x's for quite a few years and like them a lot, they are very durable and clear. I used a 2" square for my range work, this gave me a small enough target to do some serious accuracy work.
When will the barrel be back in your hands??

I too have had less than good luck with Burris. You may want to consider instead the old 6 power 30mm Tasco on that beast. I found one used and it is just about perfect for a straight power big game scope. It will stand the recoil and is powerful enough for the longer shots while not being too difficult to get onto target for the close ones. If you want a veriable, the 2-7 T/C scope that I have used for years on my 45/70 is still working fine. If they are all that tough they are a good buy. JMO.
Just read this thread. I have the 4x and also the 2.5-8 Leupold. Very pleased with the 2.5-8, bought it for the Rampro, to do it justice, but hell I use it to test all my stuff with. I put the removable rings on it and go from rail to rail with it. Glad I got it and could see the flies fine at 100 with it too. Not that I hit any.
Good luck, and am waiting to see how you make out with this,

When will the barrel be back in your hands?? -------------------------------------------------- It will be 13 day's 6 hours and 30sec.But,who's counting. My smith said,it could be sooner. Man I hope I hate waiting. What do you guy's think of the 4x32mm power Simmons?Or should I just stick with a Leupold?I got to look at both today and the Simmons had or looked to have more FOV.

My smith called and he said, he had bad news about my barrel. My heart dropped and I begain to shake.I asked what is the bad news...... Well he said, your barrel could be done this Friday after-noon.Oh man don't do that to me I said.He did say I'm sorry and I forgive him for being an ass.My smith is also my friend and hunting buddy. So I just may have my barrel for this weekend and I'll let all of you know how much velocity I losted by cutting it down.
