Greetings! Now that I found a 14" specimine,I am looking for 300 Whisper - 300/221 loads. What is the best powder, bullet etc for Deer? 125grn, 150grn etc?

Sean, I used my new 300/221 (AKA 300 Whisper) to harvest it's first two whitetail deer last season, both does. The first was 197 yds away (125 gr NBT) and the second was 115 yds (130 gr Hornady SSP) distant; one shot each w/ both deer. (I lasered the ranges afterwards so am confident of the ranges.) The 300/221 is amazingly efficient. In my 12" barrel, I get 2250 fps w/ the NBT (H110 19.0 gr/Rem 7 1/2 primer/SSK brass/OAL 2.080") and 2200 fps w/ the Hornady (H110 19.3 gr or W/W 19.5 gr/Rem 7 1/2 primer/OAL 2.065") w/o really pushing the pressure envelope. The NBT is 0.308" off the lands while the SSP is 0.05" off the lands. Haven't really played w/ seating depth yet. All loads shoot about 1 1/4 MOA. The NBT struck the spine and angled down. Found fragments of the jacket AND the green plastic tip just under the skin on the off side. The SSP bullet passed comletely through the lungs and exited. Not fair to put much faith in a single shot, but the failure of the NBT to exit kinda concerned me. Can't find the e-mail now, but in my correspondence w/ JD Jones, for small whitetail deer hunting w/ the Whisper, I believe he recommended the 125 gr NBT, 130 Hornady SSP, and 125 gr Speer TNT; I didn't try any of the latter as I felt a little uneasy w/ it since it's designed as a varmint bullet.
As far as trajectory, in my handgun, when the NBT is sighted 1" high at 100 yds, it's about 6" low at 200 yards. I don't think I'll push it's capabilities beyond 200 yards at this time. The 300 Whisper' supersonic loads are remarkably quiet in a 12" barrel, although supersonic loads ARE louder than a "whisper". I have no experience yet w/ the subsonic loads, so can't comment on them. Gary T.

Sean, I found the e-mail from JD as follows: What powder(s)? "For the Whisper all you need are H-110 or WW 296 (same powder) or N110 same burning rates and 1680. Velocities vary considerably---all subsonic loads are 1040 FPS. With a 125 from a 10" it will do 2100 and the same load from a 22" is 2500."
What bullet for small deer inside 150 yards? "125 Ballistic Tip or 125 speer." {He later clarified that as the Speer TNT}

Thanks for the info! In addition to my own loads, I also plan on trying the Cor-Bon 125 and 150 grn 300 Whisper loads.
Seems to me the 150grn load doing 2000fps would be superior to the 125 grn loads, but we shall see: I have been wrong before
Sean I have a 300 Whisper 10" barrel coming my way. I ordered two boxes of the Cor Bon ammo(150gr.) to start off with this season. Let us know what velocity you get on the Cor Bon ammo please. Greg

Sean I tried some 150s Hornady's) out of my 30 Herrett at about 2000, maybe a bit higher velocity and after going through my expansion test medium, the bullet cut a neat little 30 caliber hole through my measuring device! I was like you, 150 grains at 2000 ought to be better than 125-130 at 2150-2200fps. I think this would be true if one could find a bullet that would open up at that speed. Maybe the Remington Corelokt or bronzepoint (is it just me or is the Remington bronze point the ballistic tip of the 60s before poly carbonate was thought of?), they open up well at 6.5 TCU velocities in test media anyway (Corelokt that is)! I don't have any Nosler BTs or PTs maybe they would open up a bit at the lower velocities. [ 11-23-2002, 18:53: Message edited by: TCLouis ]

I have always had an interest in the 300 Whisper since I started reading about it many years ago. I am particularly interested in shooting the big bullets, 240 grainers. I have owned a few Whisper barrels, but traded them because I could never could find the 240 grain Sierra Match bullets in quantities of under 500. I just aquired another one (SSK) with 1-8 twist because Midway has started selling the 240 bullets in boxes of 50. Does anybody else have experience with the big bullets in the Whipser?

I've had a 14" TC Contender barrel and centergrip XP-100 in 300 Whisper for around six years now.....both are 1 in 10 twists and are extremely accurate.
For target shooting and silhouettes both the Contender and XP like the same exact load;
