I went to the range Sunday armed with my new 14 13/16", 1 in 10 twist Van Horn Contender barrel and five loads of five rounds each, in 1/2gr increments, from 12.0grs to 14.0 of H4227, under a 85gr Nosler BT, Rem. 7 1/2 BR primers and a OAL of 2.187.....cases were fire formed from .221 Fireball brass.
Shooting scoped and off bags at 85yds the load it liked was 14.0grs and you could lay a dime over the five shot group with only a partial bullet hole not being covered.
I didn't chrony the loads but going by Hodgdons data in the TC Loadbook for a ten inch barrel and a 87gr bullet, I'd estimate my 14gr load with the Nosler 85gr BT and a almost fifteen inch barrel is moving along somewhere around 2290fps....no signs of excessive pressure were evident.
I'm more than pleased with the performance of the round as well as the barrel work of Mr. David Van Horn.
