I'm thinking about another Competitor barrel and was wondering what your idea of the ultimate 14" barrel cartridge would be? I currently have 250 Savage, 35 Remington and 22 K-Hornet barrels, but I have the itch for something with a bit more reach and horsepower.

Currents thoughts range from the 7-08 or 284 Winchester to the 350 Rem mag. I don't want anything that requires custom dies and the new short mags are out because they won't fit the Competitor action.

This barrel would be used for long range deer up to elk size animals.

Your picks and why?

.376 Steyr (9.55x60) - Because it seems an efficient cartridge, and you can have a 270-grain bullet at just over 2500 feet per second from a Steyr Scout's 19" barrel just with the Hornady ammo, and I believe that the option in an emergency of using Hornady factory ammo is a real plus.

Hey Sean

I recently purchased a Steyr Pro Hunter in 376 Steyr, so I'm familiar with the cartridge (and I'm impressed!). I may end up selling my 375 H&H after seeing what the 376 can do......

Gary Smith wrote a short article about the 376 in an Encore handgun.....pretty impressive if you need that much gun! After reading his article, it would seem that the 376 would do about anything a person could ask out to 300 yards. Launching a 270 grain .375 bullet at 2400 fps from a 15" barrel is doing something!

Having said all that, the 376 is probably overkill for my needs........but it is something to think about!

Mark,

I am glad to know that you are already working with the cartridge [Big Grin] I think it could be tamer in terms of felt recoil out of the centergrip Competitor than out of the Encore, and an amazing long range hammer on Elk, Moose, etc.

Let me know if you decide to try it [Big Grin]

I have a 375 JRS 16", 308 Win 16". 22 Hornet 14" 1:9 and a 358 Win 14". I think the 358 Win would be a good one I"m going to start working up loads for it here so I looking to get 2700fps + from a 150gr, 2500 to 2600 from a 180gr bullet and 2400 to 2500 from a 225gr Bullet. I think the 376 Steyr would make a nice one if you all ready have dies and loading data for it. Is Competitor making barrels in this caliber. When you know what you would like to order e-mail me I might be able to save you some money on a mew Barrel for the Competitor. You can check out my wed site I do not have the calibers list or my price But I should in the next few week.
