What is clean?

I guess I will show my ignorance and ask a goofy question. Just what is clean when it comes to a rifle bore? Dave Vanhorn says swab with a wet swab and push patches through until they come out clean. I tried that with his brand new barrel before I ever shot it. Now the problem! If I use another wet patch it starts all over, maybe 6 more dry patches. Then another wet one and Bla Bla Bla. So just what is clean?

DED,

Depends on what you are trying to remove....

If i am just cleaning the powder out of the bore, then i will ignore the green blue copper foulin.

If i am "CLEANIN" the barrel, i keep at it until the bore is spotless. The high ammonia cleaners WILL show like a rust color when all the fouling is removed.....

If you are using a brass jag with the copper remover type solvents, it will bleed through some times. Thus you will think there is a lot of jacket buildup.
I have been having carbon build up problems more than any thing else lately myself.

Is a perfectly clean, sterile bbl. really good?
I've been using MPro-7 for a few years now and just recently started trying out this WIPE-OUT stuff.
I have a few bbls that are conditioned with Mpro-7 and cleaning is a snap, spray a couple shots down the tube followed by 3-4 passes with a brush, 1-2 more shots of MP-7. Let it set and work for an hour or 2 and patch out. Done.
WIPE-OUT is advertised as a brushless bore cleaner and works pretty darn good, if the bbl ain't just wasted, I've been using it on an old savage 340, bolt action 30-30 and have pushed alot of crap out the end of that thing, however it ain't going to remove the years of neglect that old rifle has been thru and a good brushing is going to be needed before I even think of test firing it.

Then, how often do you clean your bbl.?
I give all my T/C bbls a once over after each shoot,I'll run a brush thru them on the bench if accuracy starts going.
On my .22 rifle and pistol about every 500 rnds gets them a good scrub and I've found my little baby eagle 9mm starts losing accuracy around 400 rnds. My old 270 gets a cleaning about once a year,if I take it out of the safe.

GOOD QUESTION!!

Guns that i shoot all year round get a complete cleanin several times a year. The only problem with a COMPLETE cleanin is that they need to be fouled before i can rely on them shootin accurately or to their normal point of impact.

Guns that only get shot once a year get cleaned after use.....

I am one of those WEIRD guys that think your gun will NOT shoot good unless it is Spotless. My idea is if I spend $250.00-$300.00 for a match grade polished bore for my contender...why would I want to shoot it dirty?? I have Always got better groups with a spotless bore. I will clean the very diligently and then shoot one or two fouling shots through them and start the bench shooting. I just see no reason for a match grade blank that is dirty. I clean after every 40 or 50 shots no matter what.
I guess if someone does not like cleaniong their bore they could just order a Rough bore from VV and never worry about it?? I use a bore guide and try not to tear up the throats..But I am a CLEAN FREAK.
