I'm thinking a 10" .22 mag would be fun. Anyone use one of these? What for? How far? I was thinking the Hornet or KHornet would be a terrific little number that I'd like a lot, but I dunno.... how potent are 22mags anyway? I know, I know.... it all depends on what you wanna do with it.

Who uses one? Brag a little would ya? [Wink]

I think the .22 Mag is a great little round from the Contender. Personally, I've got a 12" Bullberry from one of their stub sales a couple of years ago. I bought a .22LR at the same time in 10" and they both really shoot! I think I paid about $165 for each barrel and I've fired a confirmed .625" 5-shot group @ 100yds with the .22LR. I've only had the .22Mag at a 25yd range to sight in, but I had all 5 shots in one hole. I never measured it with anything exact, but it had to be in the neighborhood of .25".

Concerning power, I've always figured that it is capable of taking anything <10lbs out to 150yds. I've killed a pretty big racoon with one, but it took several shots to finally put it out of commission. You could step up to a .22 Hornet and extend that range to 200 yds and consider taking coyotes up to 100-125yds. I love all my .224" Contenders!

Greetings! The 22mag in a Contender is a subject which I love to discuss and see other folks take interest in!

I had Mike Bellm re-chamber a 14" 22lr Contender barrel to 22mag over a year ago, and the results have been phenominal! All shots inside a dime's width at 100 yards using 30gn CCI Maximag +V, and accurate shots on Woodchucks all the way out to 225 yards (that 225 yard shot was done by initially mistaking the distance for 180yards, and holding over the Chuck's head 6-8": when I went to the fallen chuck, I ranged back on my Jeep window where I had taken the shot from for the 225 yard total).

To fully take advantage of this accuracy, I encourage one to use a rifle scope and a steady rest like a Harris Bipod, and use a good free floated forend such as a VVCG or Bullberry (similar to the setup in the pic below) Once Mike starts accepting rechamber work again, I strongly encourage any and all to have a 22lr Contender barrel done in similar fashion: it is increadibly fun to shoot, and saves me the trouble of re-loading on busy days when varmints are plentiful but time is not [Big Grin]
