What you failed to mention is that your target was actually the size of an elephant! [Wink] [Big Grin]

I had a 50 Alaskan built by VVCG a year or so ago. Have not had much time to work up loads, but have loaded 50 and 51 grains of RL7 behind a 525 gr. cast performance bullet. Velocity with 50 grains was average of 1420 fps. A handful to say the least. Groups were around three and a half inches at 100 yards supported for 5 shots. Several people at the range refused to shoot it, and about 15 rds. is just about all I'm good for.

It is spreading. After reading some of the posts on here I had to have one. Picked up a 14" Contender 45-70 w/break, scope mount and fore end.
The guy said he shot it 5 times, his buddy shot it once and nearly dropped it and sold it to me. [Razz]
It is shooting 300grn Sierra FPHP's w/37grn of IMR4198 at 1520fps. Not a real hot load but plenty. I took a doe opening day last fall at 80yds with it. Spun her in her tracks and dropped on the spot. I have a 4x Redfield and it's perfect for that round. I also like to take it to the range and clear the benches every so often. The scout troop that shoots on one end of the range sometimes likes it when I bring it.
Also took possession of a 14" 309JDJ. [Cool] What a cannon and deer stomper. I put a TC 2.5x7 scope on it and Pachmyer grips w/sling. I took a doe the last day of the season in the panhandle of Oklahoma where there is nothing but a few canyons and fields as far as you can see. Nothing from there to Wichita, KS to stop the wind. She walked into a small field at 235 just before sundown and she had the sun sorta behind her causing a perfect silhouette. With x-sticks and range finder, one shot and she was down. I wouldn't take for this barrel. [Big Grin]
I'm looking around now for another wild cat, maybe another JDJ.
Have fun and burn more powder [Eek!]
Mike

It's not Ken. It was a 44mag and Mike Bellm rechambered it to 444 for me. You can get a brake put on but forget about Fox Ridge doing it. They don't chamber the 444 in a contender, therefore they won't work on it.
If Mike Bellm is taking on new work, he can do ya a great brake.
Not sure if VVCG or SSK will do it or not.
I've talked with my good friend Mike Sirois of OTT-MBM about them but i'm not sure if he got that worked out yet.

Better sign me up [Big Grin] . I also have a wildcat affliction. Just sent away to Dave Manson to make up a 416 RAS--A shortened 45-70 case. I think it'll do nicely in an Encore, Revolver and maybe a Lever action. Right now I only have 323 Stibgen (8X57 imp with 0.25" neck and 0.460 shoulder), 338 JDJ, neither of which are big bores, a 416 VVC, and 45-70 BFR.

I also have a 416 taylor (Win Mod. 70) and 45-70 handi-rifle but they don't count I guess.

I've been told that this disease maybe life long and I'm going to just have to live with it. [Cool]

B_Koes: Suggested I use Viagra for my pea shooter. Is that a brand of factory ammo that you guys use in your big ol guns? I sure would like to get some if it turned you guys pea shooters into cannons.
Help. What is the secret of shooting those big bores? I can only marvel at you guys for being so tough.

Jules,
When I bought my 44 Mag I made sure I got the Hunter version in 14" just in case I did the 444 rework. You know your hooked when you shop for barrels based upon their future chamberings [Wink]
I found the 44 mag for $95 and they took a 357 mag oct in trade [Big Grin]
I got into this one at a great price so it may have to become a 444 MSMAGNUMS groups are great,
Only thing that might make the group tighter is a smaller caliber bullet!
How does the Hunter brake do on reducing the 444 down?
Does the added Zip make the brake work better? I'm sure it is capable of clearing the shooting line of those not using good ear prootection.

Thanks for the input,,,help push me over the edge.

It is loud Ken but to me it's worth it. The TC brake works great for keeping the muzzle down with all bullet weights. If you plan on getting it rechambered to a triple 4 give MBM Mike a shout. I haven't shot the barrels he made for me yet....But I will in a little over a week at our get together [Big Grin]
He rechambered one for Magnum and it's a great shooter.

I've got it bad as well. It all started with a factory 7-30 waters. I first looked at that 30-30 case and thought " Boy that must kick like a mule ", [Eek!] but it wasn't that bad. [Smile] So then I got a 309jdj " Boy this HAS to kick"!! [Eek!] [Eek!] Not that bad. [Wink] Lets go just a little bigger so I got a 375jdj. Now I 'm not going to say it doesn't kick, because it has kicked a 3x3 blacktail deer and a 2x3 muley right over backwards. [Big Grin] Yeh I have it bad. [Razz]

Yep, sign me up. I have a 30-06, 375x444, and a 444 in both an Encore and a Contender.

T/C Nut, what barrel length is your 338 mag. and how do you like it compared to others? I'm thinking about a barrel about 20" long. I like looong barreled pistols after shooting Don Bowers 20" 30 Alaskan a few years ago.

Mike,
I have not sent my 44 in yet but now that I know we have a large support group I will not feel like I'm all by my self!

Did we get the 444 brass deal done?

One question who is the ETHP? Do I need to be afraid of them? If so I may need a 444 for self protection!
