I have a vague recollection that this problem has been discussed before so please exucse my redundency. Was out shooting my .41 GNR yesterday and with each shot the action opened and the fired case ejected. Is this a barrel problem or a receiver problem??? What do I do to fix it?

Mr. Rezdog, there is a local gunsmith here in Farmington, NM that can fix that old Contender of yours.......

This wouldn't be the gunsmith who is a fugitive from the Navajo Police Department here in Arizona, is being banned from the Navajo Rez, and has restraining orders against him by his former neighbors for shooting at them? The gunsmith whose tools are a Black & Decker drill and a four pound hammer?

From what I have seen, there are very, very few "gunsmiths" that even remotely understand the Contender and how it works. I have seen some pretty dismal botchalism jobs.

Sometimes it is pretty apparent that even the "gunsmiths" at TC don't.

So whether the 'smith is top drawer or the Black and Decker type, I'd be pretty careful about who I entrusted it to. However, with TC's warranty, you can always send it back and have it restored to factory specs, whatever that means.

Naw, Mr. Rezdog, this is a real gunsmith - certified, trained and all that - I had a 45/70 Contender that did the same thing, they fixed it for me - after the factory failed to correct the problem. You have such little faith.....

MrUREasy, you must be talking about a different gunsmith than the one I know! Mike Bellm is right -- I'll take it easy on this and not rush into anything; I'm following the directions on his web site first. It's an older receiver (cross-bolt safety) so is, I presume, out of warranty. I want to try the barrel on my late model receiver and also want to explore the Pachmayer fore end which seems to be hanging up the barrel a bit. Is this a serious safety problem? I really don't have a problem with a hunting gun that opens, EJECTS, and presents itself ready for a rapid reload.

Since the problem of the barrel opening is with Garys Barrel why don't you just send the frame and barrel to Gary?? He is Very capable of finding the problem....be it locking lugs barrel...poor reloads....Whatever he will know!

There is no END to the warranty.

So TC products have an unlimited eternal warranty like Sears Craftsman and RCBS? Good to know. If I can't work out the problem myself I probably will pay a visit to Gary Reeder -- he lives in the neighborhood (only 240 miles from here) and I've been to his shop several times. I really like the .41 GNR -- excellent accuracy, comfortable recoil, just plain nice.

Mr. Rezdog, there is a possibility you're simply pulling the trigger too hard when you fire it...

Gents,
I had the same thing happen with a 44mag on a 1st generation frame. Traded away the barrel and got a nice 45/410 that gave reliable service. The 44mag empties rang me right on the forehead upon firing, very disconcerting. Not conducive to good groups ! About the same time I traded away my super blackhawk for a 45 convertable ruger..and never will go back to the 44. Long live the 45
I now have the abilty to fire the 45colt,45acp,45 S&W schofield,454Casull,45win mag,45-70.458X2"American,and soon the 458 Lott in my various handguns and rifles. I am a 45nut........the 44 leaves me feeling flat, the 45 is the right caliber for me.
I can assure you this IS a personal bias.
