How slow can you go with the Rem 35 cal 150 PSPCL and still have it expand on a deer?

I'm thinking light kid loads in a 35 Whelen.

TIA
Glenn.

Why not just load 158 or 180 gr pistol bullets you know will expand at kid-friendly velocities? I can assure you the Remington bulk packed 180 grain hollownose soft expands ferociously yet holds together nicely at 1500 fps.

Does remington still make the 150 gr .358 CL? I haven't seen any in a long time, and I'd like to pick some up.

158 JSP's Rp bulk.... Wink

At 2050fps in 357 rifle, they will get it done to 100-150yds and most say this is the best to use at those speeds.

There's also the 180 grain Partition designed for the .357 Mag and .357 Max, though the bullet is a bit pricey.

You can launch it fast enough to get a decent trajectory yet without undue recoil for the young shooters. And you don't have to be concerned about it coming unglued, either.

Also, rest assured it will expand down to 1000 fps.

But the advice from 6.5BR and nordrseta is sound, too -- and will certainly help you accomplish your ultimate goal.

Good Bobby, also, info referring to the 150gr here:

http://www.leverguns.com/articles/paco/358_wcf.htm

Not sure where to access as these bullets may be disc. but imagine you can find them if you look. FYI I have shot the 158 JHP and maybe some JSP's ....RP bulk, pistol bullets in a 350 rem mag in past year, est 3000 or better....they flatten milk jugs at 200 yds filled with water, start dropping at a distance close/past 250-300 yds. That said the 150 POINTED bullets may give much better trajectory downrange, but if you are not shooting far, keep these pistol bullets in mind, you'd be shocked at the 'shock value' on 2liter water filled plastic water bottles at 100 and 150 yds, I am confident in what they would do to a deer. Lights out quick. The 180 Bobby mentions should carry further, but are much pricier.

I completely forgot about a bullet I used in the Max in a Super 14 barrels about 15 years ago. If it's still made to the same specs, the Nosler 180 grain Silhouette was a terrific game bullet that gave relatively controlled expansion on deer. THe longest range I took game with it was around 130 yards, but it worked beautifully. Ditto for the closest, a shot taken at around 40 yards.

I originally doubted this bullet would expand well enough, but a call to Nosler and some of my own expansion testing confirmed its potential. If I remember correctly, the older Nosler manual claimed it would expand out to 150 yards when fired from a .357 Max pistol barrel.

Again, though, I have not used it for years. I'd have to do a bit of checking to see if its the same now as back then.

(Also, it was one of the least expensive bullets around.)

Thanks for the feedback. Been Elk hunting and haven't had much time to get back here. I saw many bulls, a few nice 6x6 and one at 25 yards, but I only have a cow tag. The only cows I saw were at 700 yds and the guy I was hunting with jumped out of the truck and started takeing offhand shots (*&&^%!! So NO Elk and I won't be hunting with him next year.
The kid I was going to take Deer hunting didn't have his hunters Ed done(my bad, I thought he had) so we'll see about next year. Idaho has a youth tag that is either sex so the kids can take a Doe if they want.
I have a box of the Rem 150 PSPCL that I got from Midway about 12 years ago. I was thinking they might give a reasonable trajectory out to 200 yds ish. I have a short light M98 in 35 Whelen, 16" bbl, short light slim full length stock from a military stock and Weaver K4 scope. It weighs about 5.5lbs. Found it at a gunshow and it had to come home with me, I haven't shot it much though.

If the 150's don't shoot well enough, I'll look at some of the others mentioned.

thanks.

I've got a SSK Encore pistol barrel in 35 Whelen that is 17" OAL with 11/2" of that being the SSK brake....it is wondefully accurate using Hornady #3505 180gr SSP's over 55.0grs of Varget and CCI BR-2 primers with fireformed Remington 30-06 brass.

Not sure how the 180gr SSP would hold up on large heavy bodied animals like elk and moose.....what say ye Bobby ?

I realize you already have the Remington 150s, but I think someone out there made the best suggestion with the 180 SSP.
I seem to remember this was designed for the 357 Herrett and the Herrett was designed for elk so it should be great in a greatly reduced Whelan load. Sounds like the place to look into a Seafire BD load to me!

I have a bunch of the Rem 150s and will shoot some into wet newsprint once deer season is over. I know that at 357 Mag velocities one could reload them and soot them again minus a little lead smeared off of the nose.
