Took my Encore apart last night...

I decided that before I bought the Bellm springs and lapping stone I better know what the heck I was doing when I took apart my Encore. I sat down at the workbench (kitchen table) last night and start pulling the pins. Getting it apart was fairly easy, getting it together was alright once I figure out that I didn't have to get both ends of the triger spring into that little hole, I don't know where my head was for about 15 minutes there. Other than that, it was very easy to take apart and put back together. Simple and effective, great system!

Yardbird, go to his site and download his free cd-rom on how to do a complete Encore trigger job. I've done all 4 of mine this way and am most pleased. Jeff

Oh, I did download it, I should have mentioned that. It was a big help, I took it apart without it, then I ran into that trigger spring and I couldn't figure out for the life of me how it fit in that little gap until I looked at the download and said, duh!, the L side of the spring goes in the hole in the trigger so there is tension on the trigger itself. Mike's download is great. My trigger on my factory Encore is very crisp, I'm no expert but I'm guessing about 3 pounds, I have my M70 set at 2.5 pounds at it's just a hair heavier than my M70, I don't think I'll be buying any of Bellm's stuff right now, I see know need for it, my first two barrels are a .454 Casull and a 209X50, hardly bench rest stuff, I'll keep it the way it is until I get my .243AI and .20 PPC, then we'll play! I'd love to see Bellm put it back together in his 3 minutes 10 seconds he states on the download. I'm sure he can do it, it'd be nice to watch a master at it. Kind of like being a beginning sax player and then watching a Cannonball Adderley video, intimidating!

Yardbird, I haven't timed myself on reassembly lately, but I can no doubt beat that leisurely 3 minutes 10 seconds from over two years ago.

At the Bower Long Range Shooting Clinic at Alliance, NE, I did a class on Encore trigger jobs. One of the guys said, "Hey, I want to see that!" in regard to taking it apart.

Sooooo, ok, "Time me."

29 seconds, and with little effort.

Suggestion. If you have one of the lighter pull weight frames, as it appears you do, then simply stone the rough spots in the mechanism per the instructions. Stoning just the sear notch alone will drop the pull weight some. If you are trying to target 2.5 pounds for a pull weight, stone a little and try it. You can probably sneak up on the 2.5 pound mark without getting different springs.

FWIW, I started out doing trigger jobs with the equivalent of the #7 springs, the lightest ones, and got the pull weight wanted by altering the sear angle. But getting the concepts across to average folks looked like more of a task than I felft up to, and with the convenience of the different spring tensions, I find it is much simpler to just drop in the spring that gives the pull weight wanted.

Relying more on spring tension for the pull weight wanted and making sure the hammer rebounds reliably is much less likely to result in problems.

But either approach works.

I am waiting patiently..... about as patiently as a guy waiting for a new barrel...... [Big Grin] for a shop in town to get me lined up on the program for the Encore Trigger Job Instructions so I can get the updates underway.

The update has taken back seat to other projects, but is not forgotten. In addition to updates on the Encore work, I intend to add other things such as Contender trigger jobs, adjusting size dies, and use of the Headspace Indicator..... sort of a general Encore/Contender reference.

The free download, btw, will not be up there forever, so to those who have not gotten it yet, I suggest you do so soon.

I downloaded the trigger job info and with a little stone work my trigger is by far better than I had expected it to be,my trigger had so much creep when I first got it that it would effect my accuracy because when pulling the trigger you never knew when it was going to fire, sometimes I would have to stop aiming because of sighting so long it would screw up my vision and sometimes it would fire when I was not really ready to take the shot but thanks to mikes free info my trigger is lighter, crisper and no more creep thanks mike.

Mike, I read on the site that you only need your small stones for trigger work on the Contender. So if I use my finishing Arkansas stone that I use for knife sharpening on the sear, will that work well or will I bung something up? I'm very happy with the pull weight and if cleaning up the sear will reduce it just a hair, it would be perfect. I have absolutely zero creep in my trigger (to my feel anyway, you probably would have a different opinion of what zero creep is) I have very little overtravel after the trigger breaks. Let me know if I should order a Wyoming stone or I can use my Arkansas.
