Paul and anybody else that shoots a heavy recoiling Competitor.......which scope base are you using? I have both the standard base (aluminum weaver) and the "universal" steel base that takes weaver or turn in type (Redfield/Leupold) rings. I am wondering if I should use the steel base on the barrel that will soon be a 350 Remington Magnum?

Mine is an original Competitor steel base I guess, for the Weaver style rings. It holds up well for my braked 300 Weatherby. The recoil is a little vertically and a fair amount more horizontally. If yours has the brake I say it should work with aluminum.

I feel like a major scuz because I haven't made it out to chrono it yet; between house projects and getting my boat ready to get on the water it has been difficult to find the time. I am very curious what it will do also. It has a sixteen inch barrel. I have put only eleven 180 gr Federal factory loads through it and almost that many 165 gr handloads. It groups ok, so far about an inch and a half at 100, but have a feeling I can do better once I get experimenting. It has almost no rise during recoil, but the rearward kick stings my bare hand delightfully. It looks really cool, I will try to post pics soon.

I use the steel base do to the recoil. On my 375 JRS the standard aluminum base did not hold up well
