Anybody shooting this ? What kind of velocity can be expected in a Super 14 in 7x50 Bellm ?

I don't shoot one, but it should at least match the 6.5X50R, which will push a 120 gr @ 2500 fps from a super 14.

I only did a few of the 7mmx50 R Bellm barrels, and John Kronfeld wrote up a 14" in one of the Wolfe Publishing magazines around 1992 or '93.
Vincent Van Oers, in The Netherlands, ended up with the barrel, and I think he has shot it a fair amount..... may have data to offer.

I never did any chrono work with the round, which I thought should have been pretty close to ideal for rechambering 10" 7mm TCUs.

When the brass went up to over $20 per box of 20 and was often times not even available in the US, I pretty much dropped the 5.6x50 R rounds until Hirtenberger started importing it. Then we found out that the Hirtenberger brass was too thin for necking up to the larger calibers. So once again, back to the back burner.

I have yet to hear much about the Sellier and Bellot ammo or brass.

I would not recommend the round unless you have a supply of RWS 5.6x50 R brass to use.

In the 14" and longer barrels, 7-30 Waters is still hard to top. Even my 7mm Bellm based on .444 brass is not a quantum leap ahead of the 7-30.

Old Western Scrounger lists RWS brass at $24.11 per 20,50 &63 gr. ammo at $33.46 per 20,S&B ammo at $17.48 per 20,Hirtenberger brass at $9.59 per 20. Maybe break the S&B down to components, load the powder and bullets in the Hirtenberger brass for the 5.6 x50 Bellm and use the better S&B brass to form 7x50 R ??

The standard 5.6x50 R ammo can be fired in the 5.6x50 R Bellm chamber, and as outlined, use .223 Rem. Imp. dies to size the top part of the case and a .357 Mag. pistol size die to size the lower portion..... this is for the .22 version of course.

Before stepping out into deep water regarding the S&B brass and its suitability for necking up to 7mm, I need to do some experimenting with it.

My experience with the Hirtenberger brass was limited, but seemed to indicate it was ok. Then when I resumed cutting chambers for the maxed out 5.6x50 R case, problems with the thin necks raised their ugly heads, and I had to back out again.

BTW, one of the European ammo makers does make a 7mmx47 Imp type round. I have a sample case somewhere.... good looking round.... sort of a 7mm TCU on steroids that grew taller than its siblings.

When I can find such a round tuit, I will get some S&B ammo, or if anyone has some, send me a piece or two for examination.

I am theorizing, still, that the 7mmx50 R Bellm is probably the optimum 7mm cartridge for a 10" barrel. Years back when I did some 10" barrels, the guys were supposed to get back to me with some data, but I never heard any more about it one way or the other, good or bad.

With about a 35 gr. powder capacity or slightly more, and the 55,000 psi pressure limits the small diameter case permits, it should be outstanding in a 10" barrel..... as would a .30 cal. version, but there are no .30 TCU dies commonly available. Redding has made some, but they are not off the shelf items readily available like the 7mm TCU dies are.

Ammo Depot sells S&B 5.6x50R Ammo for $13.24 for 20. Also Huntingtons use to sell once fired 5.6x50R brass for $50 per 100. Most of the brass was RWS with a few Hirtenberger and some DWM.

Mike I have some S&B brass of which I pulled the bullets and dumped the powder. I've annealed it and necked it up to 6.5. Are you interested in a few?

Old Western Scrounger no longers has the Hirtenberger Brass I tried to order some two weeks ago and they e-mailed back saying they have discountinued the Hirtenberger brass, [Frown] they didn't say if they still carried the RWS brass or not. I also ordered some 5mm Remington rimfire ammo and they are having a run made in June according to the info they e-mailed me. [Big Grin]

Yes, I would definitely like to have a case or two to compare with the RWS brass.

I have never seen any DWM brass.

If the S&B ammo & brass is any good, it certainly could be viable! Price of the ammo is reasonable enough. Good rechamber for .223 Rem. chambers that don't shoot well. No need to buy dies for it. Just back off the standard .223 Rem. dies, then as needed run the cases through a Lee .357 Mag. pistol size die. Most of these will tend to size a little smaller than other brands.

I forgot to mention earlier, when running the blown out cases through the .357 die, the top end of the die must be bored out for clearance of the larger diameter shoulder..... but..... the standard round should fit inside the Lee die without modification.

MikeB-always wanted a .30X50R, and even opened a case to a .338 and .357 years ago, when I had your 6.5 and 7x50R, and figure if I use the .300 Whisper dies, it "might" work? What kind of ballistics do you think can be achieved with the .30X50R? I was getting 2100fps with a 125 BT, and 1900+fps with a 150 BT, with my 9" stainless .300 Whisper 1:8 twist barrel. Just wondering if it would gain much? What about the .357X50R? I expanded a couple cases, and without annealling, and no problems. That RWS brass are strong!

If you were getting that kind of performance out of a 300 Whisper it seems like the 30X357 Max or 30 Max as chambered by Jim Rock oughta get on up there about all that is needed in a pistol. I theink the Whisper/30X221 is just one of those designs that are the balistically "perfect" combination for max performance!

Course I have been wrong many times before! [Wink]

If someone will tell me how to post a picture I will post a picture of it (30 Max) with a couple of the other 30s out there.

.30 Max. using .300 Whisper dies works fine. Use the .357 Mag/Max. die to size the web area as needed.

There has been some talk off and on for years about opening up the 5.6 case full length for .35 cal., but I have yet to do it. No real reason why not, I guess.

Somewhere down the line I would like to get some .30 TCU dies made, which like the other TCU dies works with the 5.6x50 R Bellm wildcats. My guess is that it would be an excellent cartridge for 10-12" barrels.

Dennis, maybe we should go ahead and do the .357 x 50 R?????? Just to find out how it works, if nothing else.

All,

I've got Mike at On Target reaming a 14" bbl. for the "357 SuperMax" as we speak. It's a Douglas blank with a 357 groove diameter.

I've annealed and necked up the RWS 5.6X50R brass in stages to get an even neck expansion and it works out well.

Final fire-forming will be done once I get the barrel.

I'll keep you posted as things develop with it.

BTW- you guys are referring to the 7X49 GJW round. I have a case from Vince right here. This one is a rimless type case.

Regards
