I THINK THAT THE 7/30 IS A EXCELLENT "DEER GETTER" --- I'VE SHOT ABOUT 35 OR SO DEER WITH THE 7/30 AND IT WORKS GOOD FOR ME. I USE THE NOSLER 140 GR. B.T. LONGEST SHOT HAS BEEN ABOUT 225 YRDS.

I use Sierra 130 single shot pistol bullets and they performed very well with one shot kills the longest shot has been in the 130 to 140 yard range and the shortest has been 30 yards, all shots where pass throughs with one to two inch exit holes. Albert
The 7-30 is a terrific performer and will do well on deer with the Nosler 120 grain BT, the Hornady 120 grain SSP or the Sierra 130 grain SSP. It will do 2400+ fps in a 14" barrel and around 2325 fps with the 130 grain Sierra SSP.
Last season, I took 4 deer, and all were with 7mms. Three were taken with a 20" 7mm Bullberry and the Sierra 130 grain SSP at 2505 fps. The other was taken with a 15" Van Horn barrel in 7 TCU using the Hornady 120 grain SSP at 2400 fps. All were one shot kills at ranges from 70/75 yards to app. 160 yards, and bullets exited in 3 of the 4 deer. The only recovered bullet was taken from my best buck ever, a symmetrical 8-pt. with a spread of 18 5/8th. The buck was taken at 108 yards (later lasered) and was facing me at a slight angle and on a slight rise. The bullet entered near the right-center of the chest, wrecked most of the lungs, took out a chunk of spine above the liver/stomach area and wound up in the left ham. It was a picture-perfect mushroom, and in fact I posted a photo of it (well, actually MSSMagnum did it for me) shortly after that. The weight retention was incredible. I would have to look it up, but if memory serves, it still weighed something like 112 grains.
One reason the 7mms do so well in the single shot pistols is the excellence of the available bullets. Match them to the game, and the 7-30 Waters will serve you quite well...

I know there are a lot of custom barrels that out perform it but the 7-30 waters is hard to beat.I have taken whitetail and mule deer with no problems.I have two barrels in 7-30 and both shoot great.

TC Louis- Using H335, it was no problem and not quite max. In fact, Nosler lists more than one load that reaches 2400 fps with a 120 grain bullet, and that's in a 14" barrel.
TC factory barrels will not reach that due to chambering along max SAAMI specs. But in a good (custom) barrel with minimal tolerances, 2400 fps is well within the realm of possibility.
