Let me preface this by saying I have never hunted cape buff, but I have worked a good bit with the .375 JDJ. And I firmly believe the Hornady 270 grain SP will give you more than adequate penetration and provide ample tissue destruction, something that can't be counted on with a full metal jacketed projectile. Put that 270 grain slug through the lungs (or through the heart) and into the opposite shoulder, and you'll have a dead bull. However, if you place the FMJ through the shoulder and into the lungs, the secondary bone fragments will wreak havoc with the lungs and put the bull down rather quickly as well. But if you don't hit bone with the FMJ and don't put a hole through the heart, a buff can cover lots of ground with a .375 hole in him.

Oops...in my haste, I forgot to answer your question. My best 300 grain load featured the Hornady bullet seated to 2.952, 45 grains of H4895 and a Federal 210. MV from a 14" barrel was right at 1825 fps, and accuracy was in the 1.8-2" range -- about twice the group size of the Hornady 220 and 270 grainers I used.
