Have fun chasing the Elk I have some relatives in Portland Oregon but havent been there in 30yrs. The country is beautiful my Uncle used to hunt Elk but he fishes more now. I have always wanted to hunt Elk but havent had the time or money to go.

Let us know about your hunt and post some pictures.

A friend used the 260 gr ballistic tips on a musk ox hunt, and was not pleased with the results. Before that he'd used the 260 gr parititions and had been much happier. Part of the issue could have been in the cold, -20 I believe, his loads were on the slow side ~1800 fps. As I recall he shot the animal 5 times, and some bullets spit their cores, and expansion was marginal. You might want to do a search on this forum, as I believe he posted the info here, with pics of recovered bullets.

The bonding of the core should help some, but it sounds like the bullet is slightly too toughly constructed for JDJ velocities. Also the 260 gr partition is known as slightly soft for 375 H&H speeds, and just about ideal for the much slower JDJ.

Paul,
Thanks for the info. I'll definitely keep it in mind and search for the thread you mentioned. Partitions were/are next on my list of "need to shoot" bullets in the JDJ.

I dont like to be negative about using partitions but I thought I would share some of my experience while working up a load for my 300WM. So far my group size is about 4 inches at 100yrds. I was very disappointed on my first & second try even loading them to touch the rifling. I have seen my friend shoot through a deer lengthways with partitions in a 7mm Rem Mag; his success is why I am interested in using them for deer
I may try the bonded bullets if I can't get the accuracy I am looking for.

Good luck and welcome to the forum.

Been using partitions since the early 70's when I started hunting deer. Heck, I think Dad still has some of the antique ones with the cannelures. Cut my reloading teeth on them and still using them in certain calibers. Great performing bullet. Agreed on next size down or up on the bullet weight. 180's perform best in my 300, although those happen to be Barnes-X's.

What weight partitions are you shooting in your 300? Dropping down or going up to the next weight might do the trick. Then again, your barrel just might not like them.

Back to the question at hand, short of trying to brain an elephant, there are but two bullets that the 375 JDJ users seem to swear by, and they are the 260 gr partition, and the 270 gr hornady. I don't recall having seen any complaints regarding accuracy or game performance with either bullet.
