Mike,
I use a cartridge that is similar to the 300 WSM (7.82 Patriot) in a XP-100. I would consider 14 inches of actual barrel a minimum with 17 being a maximum (my Patriot has a 15.75 inch barrel). The 300 WSM is a great cartridge for bolt specialty handguns. My favorite Patriot load pushes a 180 grain Sierra Game King just under 2800Fps at the muzzle.
I have taken a whitetail, couple of elk, and a couple of javelinas with this XP.

I do not have any experience with the cartridges you are inquiring about, but I have had a Savage Striker. Mine started out life as a Stainless-Synthetic .243 Winchester with the Adjustable Muzzle Brake. After I had some problems getting it to shoot as I expected I contacted Savage about having it rebarreled with a Stainless-Steel 14" Barrel without the Adjustable Muzzle Brake.

Savage replaced my original barrel free of charge, and all I was ever told was that they found it to be defective. At any rate they did indeed rebarrel my Striker with a 14" Stainless-Steel .243 Winchester Barrel without the Adjuatable Muzzle Brake.

Once my handgun was returned to me I tried some of the previous loads (and several new loads), and I can only tell you I was amazed at the accuracy of this handgun. It was easily the most accurate GUN I have ever fired. Then I made the biggest mistake I have made in a long time, I sold it and have been kicking myself ever since.

Mike, I don't have either of the 2 calibers you were asking about, only a 308 Striker. From what I have read and been told, the problem with the 270, 300 and 7mm WSM is that the effective barrel length with the brake is too short, only about 12". Too short, IMO. If I had the chance at a good deal, I would have it rebarreled to a 15" with no brake.

Thanks for the replys everyone,
Ernie, What would the velocity of the 7mmWSM be like in a 14 inch barrel. I don't want to exceed 14" because that's what my contender s are and I don't think longer would be comfortable. If I can get it I've narrowed it down to the 7mm or 300WSM
Thanks.

Mike,
I'm sorry I can't help you there. I do know my Patriot will out-run the 300 WSM, but I'm not sure by how much. Since I have never shot any of the mentioned cartridges in a 14 inch barrel. My best guess is that the 7 WSM will outrun a 284 Win by about 100 FPS (maybe 150 FPS) of barrels of the same length.
