First posted by Steve Hugel: Ernie, Marc, and I have set the dates for the seminar/shoot. It's gonna be May 26,27,+28-- that's the last Thurs,Fri, and Sat of May guys. 12-15 guys-- 1st come, 1st served. $200, $50 of which= nonrefundable deposit. Again the $ are going toward our overhead (mostly steel costs/gas for Ernie, and Marc), and probably some toward the rental of a classroom at Cottonwood Sporting Clays (bring your shotguns, if interested) facility about 4 or 5 miles from the ranch we'll be shooting at-- nice place, i tell u! The remainder will go to the rancher for use of his place. I'll be doing my best to get a rate for everybody at 1 of the hotels on the north end of Pueblo-- where all the "action" is. We'll be sending a syllabus/complete breakdown on the shoot once it's completed to attendees. This info. will cover all aspects of the shoot with technical info. on tactical long-range shooting applications. Contact Ernie, Marc, or myself via e-mail, if interested-- my # is 719-564-5609 also. Steve Ernie's Info: E-mail ernie33@sbcglobal.net Home Phone 620-662-3669 Looking forward to meeting some great guys and having a lot of fun shooting.

If you guys bring a couple of guns set-up (not required) for the seminar it will give you the chance to use different guns under similar conditions. After that, you will really know which ones you like the best for field shooting. Once you know what you are bringing, give us specific load & scope info and we will suggest how to set up your rig for the shoot (if you want us to). This will enable you to come to the seminar knowing where your bullet will hit @ different distances so you can make adhesive stickers to put on your SP (I put mine on my scope) for reminders in the field.

I'm going to post some of the info that was written earlier (November of 04) about the seminar. Many of you have read this info before and we don't intend to bore you, but some have never read the earlier posts and our intention is to inform everyone as much as possible that has an interest. S.H.O.T.S. is a 3-day seminar (Thursday-Saturday) that is for the specialty handgun Hunter/Varminter/Shooter. This would be a field shoot using field rests from field positions shooting at unknown distances on steel targets. 300+ (If you can't have that much ready we can work around that too) rounds would be needed for the amount of shooting you would be doing. You can bring more than one specialty handgun. Rest assured, I will have more than one there Location will be just SE of Pueblo, Colorado. There would also be some bench shooting to work on basic form and to get zero's set correctly (starting @ 100 yards). Distances in field courses would begin at 150 yards an go out to 500 yards. There will not be a lot of the 450-500 targets in the field courses as the more typical ranges you encounter while hunting. Yes, we will be stretching some of the limits with a few longer targets to make it challenging and fun. Of course there will be opportunities for shooting beyond 500 to 1k from both bench and field positions, but not as part of the field courses. One thing I would highly suggest is that if you intend to shoot much beyond 500 yards is that you get set-up with the posi-align rings where you can easily build minutes into your rings (or some other way). A scope with a Ballistic Plex reticle or something like it would be great. Scope with target turrets would also work well. We will be showing you how to use your scope for wind doping and identifying whether or not your animal is beyond your maximum point blank range. It is also a place where you can test every kind of field rest you have. My favorites or the Harris Bi-pod, Back Pack, Shooting Sticks, and in between my knees. everyone will need their back packs for the field courses since you will be carrying your ammo optics, etc. One of the newer stadium seats that you can adjust the straps on it are great for back support for sitting shots. At some stages we may limit you to one stance just as happens in the field sometimes. We are even going to throw in some fun surprises. What Marc, Steve, and I intend to do with the S.H.O.T.S (Specialty Handgun Outdoorsman's Tactical Seminar) is to incorporate all the basics of what Don Bower has taught and then take those principles to the field (where most of us actually hunt from). Basically, a combination of bench & field shooting. We will begin at the bench since it is easier to work on form there. We may go back to the bench later in the seminar for some LR shooting out to 1k. Although some of us will be shooting from prone position @ 1k also. Steve (sscoyote) wrote this: This is not gonna be like the Bower shoot. I would go to his shoot again at the drop of a hat, as i really like and respect Don for all he's done for the sport, etc., and it is excellent for teaching shooting technique, and LR shooting from the bench. This shoot is designed to incorporate all those fundamentals with additional tactical-type techniques to develop a system for maximizing 1st shot connections in the field to the longest of ranges, i.e. tactical reticle/target turret applications with variable as well as fixed power scopes, some anemometer use, ballistic programs, MOA, IPHY, mil-dot, ballistic reticle usage, laser rangefinders, LR scope mounting systems, etc. The field courses will involve engaging various known size targets (mostly rectangular steel silhouettes) at unknown ranges (to be ranged if needed, either optically with the reticle or via laser), from various positions, and is gonna be FUN, and educational for all of us, for sure. There will also be benches set up for zeroing, etc. "One of the newer stadium seats that you can adjust the straps on it are great for back support for sitting shots". I've found these new closed-cell foam stadium seats to be a fantastic dual purpose item, in that it can be used as an excellent backrest, as well as a field mat once unbuckled for prone shooting as well, AND can be easily reinforced with more closed-cell foam (1 addtl. layer for each year above 40).
