Tell me what you guys think of this round? I am thinking of buying a 10 inch version. Thanks!

Kudu the 30 Herett was the second barrel I purchased for my Contender in 1981,its 10",then the 357 Herett 14". Just love mine, easy to load for and shoots about any bullet well, I've put a lot of cast bullets through mine, I usually use cast bullets to fireform the brass with and they shoot exceptionally well. I've used the 125BT a lot also, now that Sierra is no longer making the SSP bullets it will probably be the best one for deer, from the information I get Hornady says their 125V-max is the same as their SSP bullet. I have a friend that uses the Speer 125TNT in his 300Whisper and says it performs great on deer. The 30 Herett will shoot just a little faster than the 300Whisper and performance is virtually the same.

I guess I am the only person who has bad luck with the 30 herrett.I bought the 30 and 357 herrett couple of years ago,the 357 is easy never a problem but I have not got the 30 to do much at all.I have gotten a lot of help from guys on this and other sites but nothing really has helped.I will keep the 30 herrett just because of the history behind it but I have just about gave up on it for any thing else.Alot of people have very good results with it but not me.This is just my .02 not trying to change your mind.Good luck.

What length of barrel WG? Bob Milek and Steve Herret pretty much created this round I think. I was on the VFDept. with Bob but never took advantage of his knowledge on the contender. I had no interest in a contender back then. Now I am becoming addiced and have lots to learn.

No I was on the volunteer fire dept with him. I guess we worked together, putting up xmas lights, putting out fires, and drinking a few beers! I was only on the dept for a year before he died. We all loved him. I had always read is work in Petersons from the time I was a teenager. Bob was quite a bit older than me. Youth don't appreciate its elders until they are gonne. He was a blast to be around. But he never convinced me to try a contender. His best friend here in Wy is a close friend of mine and he has several contenders and helped spur my new found interest.

I think it is fun to play with. Effective within limits as are all things. I've got a 14" with a Choate extension so that I can put a buttstock on the gun. Sadly, I'm a carbine fan...

One of my very 1st bbls was a 30 Herrett. My 1st wildcat also, I learned to form brass, I learned the limits of a T/C, I learned why a barrel/frame will fly open, I learned that your friend should never stand directly behind you when shooting a T/C or any gun for that matter And I learned that yes, a person can shoot one of these guns out to 100yds and beyond and actually hit something.
That bbl was the cause of my addiction and today I'm sorry I ever got rid of it as I now realize that bbl was probably one of the 1st ones out there and highly sought after. Oh well live and learn.

What kind of velocities are you guys getting with the 10" 30 Herrett? I've got one on order from Bullberry. Sounds like kudu56 and I think alike. I also thought that this would be an excellent cartridge in a 10" barrel.

I picked up one of the older models, 10", welded front sight and 6 groove a few months back. Finally got the loading dies, then had to locate the forming die. Made some brass and loaded it with 125grn Nosler Ballistic tips. I took it out today to the range. I have a Redfield 2.5x pistol scope on it. At 50yds it shot two groups that were around 1". I was hesitant to shoot at 100 yds due to 10-20 mph gusting wind. I put up a targt with a 6" black bull with a 2" white center. I shot five times and all five were in the 2" circle with 4 or them around 1.5" group with the last one a little high. I really like it. I think with the light recoil and 100-150 yd range it will be a good deer round. I picked it up thinking that if it was a good shooter and the recoil was light my neighbor could use it hunting deer. He has wanted to handgun hunt but he can't handle any of my bigger calibers. This should get him started. I wish I had found one earlier. I really enjoy making the brass and shooting it. Less recoil than my 8" .357. Good luck in you quest for a barrel.

Mike
