I'm thinking of gettin a 270cal barrel blank for my next contender project. Any ideas on wildcats that would be suitable for this? Anyone have any info on the 270 Savage? BTW, I still have plenty of 7.62x39 brass.

I like the idea of the .270 Ren also but must admit it is really limited in application. For a short range, small game cartridge, it would do well and destroy little edible meat as the velocity won't get you much expansion. In fact, a flat-pointed, hard cast slug may be just the ticket; so, too, would be a soft lead HP. The .270/225 IMP (aka .270 JSJ) is not a bad option, but the .270 Savage would do virtually the same thing. Dies for the .270/225 may be a little cheaper ($70 or so) as compared to the .270 Savage -- or so I would guess. But for medium game, the 130 grain BT would no doubt work very well and give you a solid 200+ yard performer.

How about a 270X444 marlin? Should be a great deer/large varmint round with Ballistic Tips or V-Max bullets!!!

I was also thinkin of maybe using a 307win case since it has a rim. Would be much less work on the brass to size from .308 to .270. I could have a set of standerd 270win dies shortened for the shorter case and opened up to have less body taper and also have a 40 degree shoulder added.

This is all I could find on the 270 Savage. http://www.reloadbench.com/popup/cart/090.html http://www.reloadbench.com/cartridges/w270sav.html But will it work in a contender? I'm thinking 20" bull barrel.

A .270-221 would be neat. I think the thing to worry about would be bullets. Which if any bullet weights available would expand. And which case would have enough "oomph" to get them expand. Unless your interest is just in targets and small game, then the sky's the limit. I had a 10" 270REN. A fun little cartridge, I sort of miss it, but it did get boring fast on paper. (Mine didn't do super groups, did't have enough for long range varmints or enough power for medium game. It would make a good small game round I suppose. I want to have a Semi Wad Cutter mould made, had have Ruger single six converted to a slightly shorter 270 REN.

I thought of all the 44 cases and even a few of the 45 cases. But I may lose alot by necking it down to 270. I'm thinking the 307 brass may be the way to go. I really don't know if any of the 270 bullets will open at this volocity. There all very tough bullets. [ 06-08-2003, 02:45: Message edited by: Jules ]

Jules, A 270 Savage on 307 brass would be a real winner. In fact, it probably would be less than 100 f/s slower than the 7 mm Bellm. For a look at my test data check Mike's page and look under the Triad for the 7 mm. I tested it with 120, 139 and 154 grain 7 mm bullets, then after finishing the formal testing, developed a load for a 150 grain Nosler bullet. That thing has plenty of velocity so as to have an effective range with the 150 grain bullet to 300 yds. There was enough case capacity left to carry even more powder, so with the 270 Savage having a little less capacity you should be able to get the velocity you want. And using the 307 brass, it would give you more strength in the case than the 7 mm Bellm based on the 444 Marlin brass. The only limitation I would see is there are relatively few .277 bullets to choose from, but even with that, you should be able to work up an excellent load with the ones that are available. Keep us up to date on that project. Don Shearer
