Just sold my 300x221 barrel. I plan on getting a new barrel this one a 10" 300 Whisper made by none other than SSK. I plan to order this barrel with a 1-8 twist. I want to be able to shoot heavy bullets. Does anyone out there shoot a 300 Whisper made with this barrel twist and if so how do you like it?

My SSK 300 Whiper barrel shoots well. I have no complaints About it. It has already taken 1 Boar & hoping to take a deer with it in the future. I also took a deer with My T/C 300 whisper barrel before selling it to get the SSK barrel. I have to admit it has taken a back seat lately with the other things that I've been working on, But the 300 Whisper was my first Cartridge with the contender & I do really like it. Rich Jake

How does your SSK whisper shoot the Lighter bullets?? Are the lighter bullets accurate with such a fast twist? I would think that for target shooting the heavy 200 grain bullets are nice but they wont expand on game will they? Fireball
Fireball I was able to 1" group with 125 Nosler Bal Tip. That's probably as good as I can shoot. The barrel will probably shoot better.
I did also do an unscientific test with Sierra 220 HPBT's They shot well with subsonic speeds. I used the thicker part of the cross hairs as aiming point with these bullets at 50 yards & was pretty accurate at that distance without any changes on my scope. With the 220's you want it to tumble not expand.
I would like to try the subsonic on game, But am A little leary of wounding an animal just trying something out.
I just chronographed my SSK stainless 9" 300 Whisper last week, with some 125 BT and 150 BT, and the 125 BT easily went 2100+fps, and the 150 BT easily went 1900+fps. I have attained these velocities with 296, 680 and Lilgun. But the most accurate bullet has been the 240 Sierra Matchking at subsonic, with Rem 7 1/2 primers and #9 powder. I'm sure other powders will work, since the #9 was the only powder I tried with the heavy bullet. But I've shot more 1/4" 100 yard groups with the 240 MK than any firearm. "But", as many know me, I'm just starting to feel the itch for something new again, and usually I have to sell what I have to get something new?
Man...forget about that little ssttteennkkiinnggg Whisper. hehehe. I shot my .338 JDJ #2 last weekend...what a hammer...on the target end! I'm keeping the figures under hat until I get the article written, but I'll tell you that a .309JDJ has NOTHING on this round.
I'll get back to you about the e-mail you sent me...RE: 357 Mag.
