I am thinking about building a bolt pistol in 338 and was woundering if I could get 2500 to 2600 FPS with the 300g siera bullet out of a 18 inch barrel and what case would it take.

crow mag,
50 has a 338 WSM in a XP-100 and is getting 2750 FPS with a 210 NP bullet and I think that his barrel is around the 15-16 inch variety. Hopefully, someone here has some software that could compute this but I think that the Lazzeroni Short action 338 case would maybe approach your lower velocity objective that has a short case design. The cost is quite a bit higher when it comes to brass ($40.00 per 20 for unprimed brass and that was 6 years ago).
The more I think about it you will likely have to go to one of the larger/longer cases. A 300 grain bullet has a great BC, what are you considering using it for?

Long range Elk and Deer I was thinking about using a 338 Lapua or a 338 ultra or something in the lines of that. I would like to shoot 250g also. I may want to use a custom action like a 8.5 inch bat. If I go with the Lapua brass the case head is to big for a xp 100 action I think.

crow mag,
What is the difference between the head of the short action Lazz case heads and the 338 Lapua? About all the XP can handle is a case head size the equivelant of the Lazz cases. I have one in a 7.82 Patriot and there isn't a lot of fudge room to go up in head diameter. In fact, It caused Tannel to scratch his head a few times to work out exactly how he was going to make the extractor work right.
Are you going to make it as a rear grip or will you have someone design a transfer system to make it a center grip?

Ernie

PS If you want to read about my elk hunt and how the Patriot did (note from a recent e-mail i sent you) check out this other forum http://specialtypistols.infopop.cc/6/ubb.x?a=cfrm&s=9066056864
It is under the handgun hunting and varminting page.

I don't have The specs on a Lazz case but the lapua measure .587 with a dial caliper. If I go with the Lapua case I will be using a custom Bat action that is much stronger than a Rem action. I am going to have a custom laminated wood stock maid up rear grip. I want to shoot it from a rest and a bipod. I am thinking about the WSM also.

The Lazz case measures .577 at the head. The Lazz short action case should give more performance than the WSM case. Overall case length on the brass I have in my hand is 2.041.

As far as using a rifle scope with this (338 WSM or 338 Short action Lazz)in a specialty pistol with a 18 inch heavy barrel W/Brake off of a bench I would say it is a possibility. Since I have not handled a specialty handgun like you mention here & by e-mails I just can't say for sure. Use a handgun scope first and have someone measure the travel of the gun with hunting loads. If you think it will work then use a Leupold since they have the longest eye relief. You will have to make sure you back off everytime or it will give you a kiss you will never forget. It is easy and almost normal to want to see a full field of view-be very cautious.
