Good day
I'm interested in a Savage striker in 300wsm if I can get it in Canada.
I currently shoot a couple of Contenders and love em but thought the
Striker would have better balance due to the action being farther back.
Anyone have any experience with this gun?

I had a Striker Mdl.510F in 7mm08 for a couple years till I traded it off for another XP-100.

The Striker is heavy, mine went 6 1/2lbs scoped and you'll need to invest in a Rifle Basix replacement trigger (aprox. $80.00) or have the trigger worked, they're terrible out of the box.

Aside from being somewhat heavy and needing trigger work they are a very well made and super accurate pistol, my 7-08 would group at or under 1/2" off bags all day long at 100yds, with handloads, if I did my part.

If the right deal presented itself I'd probably purchase another one.

Hello Ike
You mention you bought an XP100. I didn't think Remington made them
anymore????? I tried one about 15 years ago in 7mmBR and loved it.
Then I got into Contenders and love them but for hunting I thought the
XP or Striker would be beter balanced for hunting? Maybe I'm looking for
an excuse to buy another cannon. One of the contenders I shoot is a
375JDJ.

I have two Savage Strikers. One in the discontinued laminated stock in .308, the other in a stainless .223. I love em. The .308 has taken deer and antelope with no problems.

I also have an XP. But since you can't get them anymore (and everyone who has them thinks their worth more than they are) the Striker fits the bill. The are accurate and not too expensive. I agree about the trigger, I replaced both of mine with the Rifle Basix triggers.

I also ordered my Striker in .300 WSM. Let me know what you think of it.

Mike,

Both the centergrip XP-100 single shot and the reargrip XP-100R (three round repater)are still out there even tho they haven't been made in several years but they are getting pricey, go to www.gunsamerica.com and scroll down and click on Remington XP100 to get a idea of what's out there and what the going price is.

I just like the balance, weight and overall feel better of the centergrip XP's vs the Strikers but that's just my opinion.

I know (or at least think I know) that us fellas from down here can't bring handguns in to Canada to hunt with, are Canadians allowed to hunt with handguns ?....are there any restrictions on calibers that can be used or animals that can or can't be hunted with handguns ?....do you have a special handgun hunting season or do you hunt with them during regular gun season ?

Mike, I have a Savage Striker in 308 Win. Although it's a VERY accurate gun, I've yet to kill anything w/ it. [Embarrassed] After taking it whitetail deer hunting some the first season I had it, I found out I really didn't like the way it handled, compared to the Contender. Unfortunately, that's not something I could've known until after having used it in the field. [Confused] As I mentioned, it's very accurate; difficult to find a load using 150 gr Sierra SP's that will NOT shoot less than 1 MOA. [Big Grin] In addition, in my gun, the velocity (2500 fps w/150 gr bullets) is closer to 309 JDJ levels than what I was expecting. I did some trigger work myself (adjusting screws only) and was satisfied w/ it. Trigger is now 3-3 1/2#. If you're into big, bulky, bolt action handguns, the Striker is a good way to go. In addition, very rarely will you hear of a report of an inaccurate one. One word of caution: [Roll Eyes] it can be VERY difficult installing certain types of handgun scopes, especially "short" ones (i.e. Simmons 2.5-7X, Burris 2-7X, Leupold 4X, etc), although "longer" ones (i.e. Burris 3-9X and 3-12X) are not as difficult. In order to use my Burris 2-7X, I ended up w/ a T'SOB base/Burris high rins (3). Were I to do it over again, I'd probably try the one piece Weaver base first. The T'SOB is really good, but also a good bit more expensive than the Weaver. I was trying to get the gun set-up for deer season and went w/ the T'SOB as I KNEW it would work. I'll probably keep it just because it's so accurate. Gary T.

You can use the Leupold one-piece base for just about any scope. I've had both a Leupold 4x and the Burris 3-12x with no clearance problems. Mine is a .308, and I use it mostly for target shooting. It is rather bulky for the field, but some people have no problem with it. Just remember that if you plan on hunting with it, you'll likely have to rest it on something due to it's balance. Doesn't exactly balance like a TC or revolver.

Off topic but I have a Shillen match stainless 15inch bbl chambered in 6BR for the savage striker that was part of a trade which I do not need. It is bolt on ready to go and gives FANTASTIC accuracy as I shot the bbl before trading the remainder of the deal off. This bbl will shoot dimes at 200 meters with benchrest bullets. You would spend over $400 duplicating this bbl but I will let it go for $175 shipped in the conus. Let me know if interested.. Regards

Thanks for the replys everyone.

The XP I tried years ago must have been a center grip and I thought the Striker looked similar in pictures. I guess I'll have to see if Cabellas has on in Grand Forks and I'll go check it out. It's nice to hear what others think about a gun in the field. My Contender barrels are 14" and I find them a bit front heavy but love them with a Harris bi-pod. JD doesn't recomend it on the 375 but I used anyways on my Mule deer hunt this fall.

Ike:
No we can't hunt with our handguns in Canada. We can have them at home but cannot use them legally anywhere but on a registered gun range. I have to drive an hour on way to get to a 200 yard range which is the maximum I've shot my contenders. It sucks but what are you gonna do?? [Wink]
I'm lucky I only live about one and a half hours from the border and I can afford to make hunts on my own. I've hunted Montana for antelope about a dozzen times and this year went to Wyoming for Mule deer. Last year was the best when I made a loan from the bank and went to South Africa. I was great except after checking my scope for zerro my Contender broke. I'd brought a spare frame but it turned into a disater also and I had to borrow a rifle for the hunt. I managed to shoot a small Kudu before giving up on my sorry gun and using a rifle.
Let me know if you're intested and I'll tell ya the story and send you a few pics.

I too have had my go around with a Savage Striker. Mine was in .243 Winchester, and was one of the most accurate GUNS I have ever shot. However in a fit of stupidity I sold it. I just never did get used to it's shape, weight and size I guess. I reshaped the Grip some, but never did get it to my liking

Savage Striker Article

I have included the link to an article on the Savage Striker in .243 for what it's worth.
