I know it is a little off topic or rather to long to be a single shot pistol but those of us with the One Good Shot Mental outlook may also have a #1. My brother in law wants to rebarrel a #1 from 30-06 to 338-06 and was looking fo a shop that could do this. Any past experience? Thanks, Ken

Ken, if I remember SSK was rebarreling the #1's. The #1's were a little fickel to work on. The regular accuracy improvements don't always apply to these rifles. I had a #3 a few years ago, wish I had it back now. Jeff

I have a Ruger # 1V in 220 swift, a nice compliment next to the T/C Handgun. I bought a 25-06 bbl and plan on having it done this winter hopefully just down the road to a local smith. I had him rework a security 6 a while back and he had it longer than quoted but once I got it back all irratation disappeared, he did a real fine job so...Might as well give him another shot. I wont even plan on shooting it til next spring. Have you ever done any of the forend tricks on one? mine shoots pretty good as is and has it's days when it is just perfect, but I was thinking while I was going to have it off for so long I might play with it a bit. Ya that swift is a blast to shoot. However my bbl is getting a little burnt out, hence the reason I got a 25-06 bbl for it.

Why does your brother want to rebarrel the #1? If the barrel is worn or damaged Ruger will rebarrel it for about $135 and then it will be worth a lot more. Otherwise the 30/06 will shoot heavy bullets just about as fast as a .338/06 and it's closer to bore capacity. If a .338 is a must then sell the #1 and buy a new #1 in .338 and load it to whatever. Then it will be worth a lot more. I guess that it will cost less to do it that way, it will be orginal and easier to sell should you ever want to. Also the lead time will be less and the new rifle will have a warrantee. What could be easier than that?

He jsut wants a 338-06 in the #1. The barrel is not worn out as it has less than 40 rounds thru it! I have ask many times why not go another way but the simple answer is always, "I want it". He lives in London and the Rifles are kept in Texas waiting for his return. He only can read about shooting as it is limited in the UK for not only a UK resident but even more so for a US citizen. The #1 I doubt will ever be sold as he does not have to sell one to get one like I do!!

Now that we find out he has money then the want is not all that expensive. I heard about a smith that specilizes in #1's and he has a better trigger for them and most interesting to me a quicker locktime system. I am sure he could rebarrel one also. I just don't have the time to get that name for you just now.

Thanks Don, If you find the Smith's name let me know. Yes if we all only had the money to buy what we dream of owning life would be great. I do have the good fortune to be able to shoot any of the toys while he is away! He has a 220 Swift that I LOVE! He has no handguns at all, only rifles and shotguns. It is a good balance as I prefer T/C's and handguns.
