This weekend was a "bonus" antlerless deer weekend in part of Oklahoma and I took an 88 pound doe with the Competitor in 250 Savage. The shot was broadside at 60 yards, got complete penetration and the doe only ran about 50 yards. This is my first year to hunt with the Competitor and I like it more every time I use it!

Way to go Mark! I'm sure happy with the barrel and what a way to break it in. I would like to see the Competitor some day. Try some loads out on Coyotes. How does your 6.5JDJ perform? What rifle cartridge is it formed from and what rifle cartridge does it compare to? Mike

Mike The 6.5 JDJ is based on the 225 Winchester case necked up and improved. It will push a 120 grain bullet to 2400-2500 fps. Performance wise, it is basically a duplicate of your 7-30 Waters. I have never really done much with the 6.5, as you have probably gathered, I have a bunch of barrels but always seem to play with my favorites. Truth is, I can't afford to put scopes on everything!!!!! On top of that, I got the Competitor this year and am really enjoying shooting and hunting with it! Hard for me to believe, and I'm not ready to dump the Contenders, but I prefer the Competitor!!! One of my resolutions this year is to really see what the barrels I don't use much will do..... tough job but someone has to do it!!!! I have actually thought about selling off a few more of my seldom used barrels and buy another Competitor.......just haven't made up my mind to do it yet.....

Thanks for info on the 6.5. If you need help wringing out your barrels, just call. If you decide to slim down your collection of Contender barrels let me know, it might be something in between one of my barrels or something a little different. Take care and have a Happy New Year. Mike

Congrats on dropping the doe and blooding the .250 Savage, a caliber I am quite fond of. I seem to recall you using the 85 grain BT. If not, would you care to give a few details of the load?

Bobby You remember correctly, I used an 85 grain Ballistic Tip and 748 powder. The ballistic tip hit a rib going in and out, exit was about 1"......the doe ran about 50 yards before piling up and there was no blood trail until the last 15 yards or so. The shot was a bit high and most of the blood stayed inside the chest cavity. She had started blowing it out her nose, so there would have been a good trail if she had gone any farther. I'd like to try some 100 grain BTs in the pistol, but I have almost 900 85 grain BT bullets I got when I purchased my 257 JDJ......kinda hard to buy bullets when you have 900 on hand!!!

Some years ago I used a 15" Contender in .25 Bullberry to take several Kodiak Island blacktails, and it worked great. I used the 100-grain BTip at about 2550 fps, and never recovered a bullet on four deer - all were larger than the doe, but they weren't 250-pounders either. The .25 Bullberry gives performance very close to the factory-level .250 loads I fire in my custom XP-100. A great deer cartridge, but I'd worry about the 85-grain BTips on larger deer. These varmint bullets are much softer than the 100s are, and they may not get through a larger deer at an angle. But hey, they certainly work....Congrats!

AK JD Jones has done CONSIDERABLE testing of the 85 grain ballistic tip in his 257 JDJ cartridge )similar performance to the 250 Savage) and it is THE bullet he recommends for deer. When I say considerable testing, I mean hundreds if not thousands of animals killed with it. I know that the 257 and the 85 grain BT has been used on game up to the size of camels (BIG!) with good success. I shot a BlackBuck antelope with my 257 JDJ earlier this year and got 18" of penetration!!!! In theory, the 85 grain bullet shouldn't work.....but it just does!!!
