Whats the chamber like in the factory barrel?

Decent leade/throat or just like all the others, it would/could benefit by being completely REPLACED?

i wish i could help you out, but i wouldn't know if i looked. [Roll Eyes] my factory 14" 30-30AI shoots great, and is working on being my favorite deer rig. only minor problem i have, is tight necks on regular 30-30 brass before fireforming. after they are formed, they go in easier.
my main purpose is hunting. target shooting with my 30-30AI is only interesting for playing around with my hunting loads. if i were shooting competition, i'd probably be shooting something else. so, i don't worry about throats, etc on factory barrels. if a factory barrel shoots good, which is most of the time, i don't worry about it. if i find one that does not satisfy me, i'll have to think more about it. maybe i'm lucky, but so far all my factory barrels satisfy me in the accuracy dept. That certainly answers one of my questions. Is the barrel a shooter?

I'm like you, I don't need to get out a micrometer to measure one of my 100 yard groups, but do want a good hunting accuracy barrel.

I have NO idea how accurate my 16" 45-70 barrel is either, but no matter who did the shooting, NO clay pigeon has survived at 100 yards so that is close enough for the limitations of that cartridge for me.
Others will want more accuracy than that and we all get what we want that way!

i think it's a shooter. it will hold 3 to 4 tight(around 1"@100), then i'll pull one shot out every time. [Big Grin] i do that a lot with all my barrels. [Frown] load developement was easy as pie. i had some good info to start with. had a little help on what was working in a couple other barrels. one just like mine(a factory barrel), another was a rechamber. imr4198 is the only powder i had to try to get accuracy, and i've only shot 2-3 different bullets(hornady 130grssp,and 130gr sp, plus sierra 125gr sp). it has liked whatever i put in it so far. well, the win. 150gr hp factory 30-30 rounds i shot thru it, for forming a few cases, and testing, were not really what i call accurate, but would work for deer in a pinch. they(win. factory rounds) probably shot about as good as they would have out of a lever action gun.

a fun, mild, accurate forming load that i found by accident runs about 1800fps. i had some 125gr sierra's and imr4350 on the bench, so i tried them to form cases. imr4350 is too slow to get velocity, and fills up the case, but it hits point of impact at 100, compared to my deer hunting load's sight in of 1 1/2" high at 100. 37.5gr imr4350, 125gr sierra sp, rem 9 1/2 primer, 2.67"oal. this load shoots the same in either win. or rem brand brass.

I dug out my unfired factory 30-30AI barrel, no sights, has new style target style crown, narrow land rifling, and lo and behold!!! A throat and a lead into the rifling! It looks nothing like my other contender 30-30 barrels which have no throat from the factory...but do now that they have been throat reamed.

regards,
Graycg
