6mm PPC or 6mm BR

Hello all,

I'm debating with myself over whether I should get a custom Encore 15" SS 6mm PPC or a 6mm BR. Do any of you have one or both of these calibers and can you offer your thoughts on which would be better as far as accuracy is concerned? I plan to shoot 60-70 grain bullets exclusively at paper and game under 100 pounds.

Thanks for your expertise!

Both are superbly accurate, but as far as winning reputation is concerned, the PPC owns the lion's share in this matchup.

I actually prefer the BR, however, as it will offer a bit higher velocity. But my primary application would be hunting, not punching paper. And if it is truly serious competition you are considering, the PPC is the way to go.

That being said, you really can't go too far wrong with either choice. In a decent barrel, both will have the capability to shoot better groups than most of us can ever hope to hold.

Javelina, It's hard to add much to Bobby's usual sage advice, but I'll add just a few minor considerations. Although I don't have a 6 BR, I have a 22 BR built on an XP-100. It is superbly accurate, especially when the idiot pulling the trigger does his job! [Razz] I believe 6 BR brass is more easily available and not quite as expensive as 6 PPC brass. Don't know about the PPC, but if you go the route of the BR, be aware the flash hole is a different size (smaller) for Lapua than it is for Rem brass; not sure about the Norma brass. Consequently, Lapua (and possibly Norma) require a special flash hole deburring tool than does the BR. I'd also be sure and mention to the gunsmith that you intend to be shooting the lighter bullets so you can get the most appropriate twist. Admittedly, the PPC has won more benchrest matches than the BR, but I'm not sure many of us (myself included) would be able to reliably tell the difference in our shooting. Check around w/ your favorite handloading dealer/wholesaler on the brass issue. (May not really be an issue for you.) Gary T.

Thanks for your advice guys - you make some good points that I'll definitely have to keep in mind.

Gary - your statement about not shooting well enough to tell the difference between the two cartridges made me chuckle (at myself)! The phrase "couldn't hit the broad side of a barn," although invented decades and decades ago, was undoubtedly meant specifically for me - I guess that's why I'm looking at the most accurate cartridges. . .I need all the help I can get!

:-)

Thanks again to everyone!

Javelina,

Just FYI on the 6MMBR-Rem vs 6MMBR-Norma. Got this info from the web, for what that's worth.

Differences are first base diameter
Remington original case have small base .468
Lapua and Norma Brass have 308 base .470
Neck of Norma chamber (original JGS drawing) is .271
Neck of 6 BR Remington chamber can be
regular chambering .271
match chambering .262
Max case length is bigger in LAPUA than in 6 BR match chamber.
Actually most chambering job is done to use LAPUA or NORMA that are far better than REMINGTON.
Case length: better is to use Regular NORMA/LAPUA case length
Neck: that depend the use of your rifle
. 271 to shoot factory NORMA load (diamond) this neck work well for target shooting up to 1000 yards.
.268 light neck turning just to clean off center defect.
.262 neck turning as all BR case (PPC)
Throat: same following you use short BR bullet or long VLD bullet.

Hello Chuckwalla,

Thanks for the data, this can get much more technically complicated that it first appears - it's great to know there are knowledgeable folks out there that will share their info. I'll have a lot more knowledge now when I make my selection.

Thanks again for your help.
