Maybe someone here can help. I bought a rynite stock for my TC contender but I don't like the smallish forend that goes with it. So I got one made of walnut in the size and style I like. To match the texture finish of the rynite, I got a can of black wrinkle finish paint from an auto parts store. It's made for valve covers and air cleaners. I put 3 coats on the forend and it matches great. But,it don't seem to be a very hard finish. Is there some kind of tough, dull clear coat finish that can be used to put over the wrinkle finish?

Jules Malm is correct, recoating the wrinkle finish probably won't give you the results you are after. Any hard coating you apply over a soft coating will chip easily and will probably peel. Polane is/was an industrial coating....it was not available through Sherwin Williams automotive division, don't know if you can order it through a SW home store. Even if you can order it, I promise you won't want to pay what it will cost to buy the smallest packages of paint and catalyst to paint one forearm! I assure you that the materials will cost more than a new forearm! If you are determined to paint the wood forearm, your best bet is to try to find a product called Zolatone. It is a tough modified laquer that should work well for your application. It can easily be applied to give a texture that will approximate the rynite stock. You will need spray equipment to apply it and it isn't exactly cheap either. If I was you, I'd look around and see if you can find one of the aftermarket forearmss that were available......I've seen several of these at gunshows and they are bigger than the stock TC forend.

Sometime back, one of the guys from VVG told me to use the pebble-guard finish for automotive rocker panels and then go over it with a black paint. The pebble-guard is a clear textured finish that is made to be overcoated with whatever color you need. I think it is available in auto parts stores in the spray cans. It is supposed to be very durable and resists chipping. FWIW Regards

Thanks guys. I guess i'll be leaving this finish on till after hunting season. I got the stock and forend to use so I don't mess up the good ones I have. I was going to just paint it flat black and I saw the wrinkle finish paint for valve covers so I figured it would be tough stuff. It's a damn shame cause it's a perfict match to the rynite stock. Ray, They had the pebble guard there to. I guess next time i'll ask before I buy. At least the forend was only 35 bucks. I'll remove the wrinkle finish after hunting season and try something else.

Yes, but it is some tough shit! I had some around here a while back but now can't seem to find it. It is tough enough it is quite possible it could have escaped... I don't recall it costing that much back in the 80's... That was a long time ago. Malm

Jules The rock guard is also going to be soft. I was a Tech/Sales Rep and area sales manager for Sherwin Williams Automotive Finishes.....back in another life so I'm very familiar with many, if not most, of these products. Any product that will do what you want (as far as durability) is going to be expensive to purchase, will require the right equipment to apply and will be extremely hazardous if you spray it at home. Most catalysts (think durability) contain isocyanates (can you say Cyanide?), trust me, that is NOT something you want to breath or get into your house!!! Jules, Check with VVCG. I've got a wood forend that they did to match a rynite buttstock. It feels similar to the rynite but with the weight of wood. Also, whatever they used to give it the raised finish is hard.

Gary, V V Dave has givin me the info on everything I need to put a tough finish on the forend. I'll get the stuff but won't be doing it till after hunting season. Hell of a guy....that Dave. I get the forend from Bullberry and VVCG tells me how to finish. What can I say???
