I am looking for a good nockem on there butt caliber for a T/C 10-12 inch barrel. I have shot the 44mag with 330 gr garretts nice load but have had problems wanted a little more so I thought of 454 but the ballistic Coe. is really bad on both of them. I have fired off the 30-06 in the T/C was a little hot. I started thinking hell I reload why not try something a little different 338-08. Little less than the 30-06 (I think) and better range and ballistics than the 454 and the 44 mag.
Tell me what you think I regular bow hunt. Primary weapon however I do on some hunts great big hogs ect. carry back up right on the shoulder. I also like the idea of doing a semi guided have the light option in my bag. Looking for something out to 150-200 yds (perfect setup rest everything right).
My big question is with that length of barrel will I get anything out of it. Would I be better suited with a different caliber.
I usually get great advice here on all my questions so fire away. I would like to stay with a larger diameter bullet. I might hunt elk with this that would be the largest game most likely hunting whitetail and hogs.
Balistic coeficients don't come into play inside 150 yds, the 454 is the real deal with 250's leaving at over 2000 fps from a 12" encore. Even the 300 gr bullets can be driven near 2000 fps from a 12" 454, and that's flat enough shooting for at least 175 yds.
Now, if you want a bit more range, get a 350 rem mag, it pretty much matches a 358 win rifle, which means 225 gr @ 2400-2500 fps, zero it at 200 yds, and you have a 250 yd gun for any game in NA, though I'd personally load it a bit differently for big bears.
