Someone in this section (from WV I believe) said he had good sucess using the 30 caliber 110 grain round nose bullet for deer. How fast are you pushing it and is the bullet staying together? Is it penetrating? How big are your deer (field dressed)

I remember that post but cannot remember who posted it. For what it is worth, Steve Herrett and Bob Melek used that 110 Gr. RN SP out of the 30 Herrett between 2100-2200fps, and I am not inclined to argue with it or with their success simply because my favorite 30cal deer bullets out of handguns are those in the 125-150 weights, or because every few years we are told by the gun industry funded rag writers/product lobbyists that the effecient and effective cartridges of yesteryear are now inhumane or marginal. I can tell you that in south central VA, our whitetail deer seldom exceed 180lbs, and are usually 120-150 lbs. I am not sure if they often exceed this size in WVa, but that 110gr bullet has accounted for plenty of deer in these parts. That being said, I am probably not a good one to argue against such a bullet choice though, as I have taken damage permit deer with hot 9mm loads and many sorts of 357mag loads, and not felt undergunned when hunting within my parameters and limitations for each cartridge [like a bow hunter with the 9mm, and out to 80 yards or "a bit further" with the 357]. if you are a competant and proficient shot with your weapon of choice, then hunt and use the bullet similarly to the way Herrett and Milek used it, and you should do just fine.

If you consider the 30-30 with a 150gr. bullet good medicine for deer hunting, you'll like the 30 Herrett with the 110gr. SP RN too. They both (amazingly) will do the same work. Try it for yourself and see. TDLefty
