Well, after being without a 6.5 JDJ for a while, I picked up another in a trade from Jeffery Campbell (TC-List, to which I just subscribed 2 weeks ago). It arrived today, and preliminary testing shows typical SSK accuracy. Using a mild load from the past, the 1st 3-shot, 100 yard group went 0.760 -- and conditions weren't the best for accurate shooting.

If the rain moves out of the area and the wind gets a little more docile, I'll run a few more loads through it tomorrow. I just may have it ready for this weekend, when the Texas whitetail season ends. I've been given the opportunity to take a couple of does, and I've yet to decide what caliber/gun I want to pack for the occasion.

Hi Bobby,
What powder are you using?

The "mild load from the past" was 38 grains H4350 under the Speer 120 grain bullet. I have now settled on 2 loads for this barrel: 40 grains of H4350 under the Speer 120 and 34.5 grains Re-15 under the Nosler 120 grain BT. Both produce a shade over 2400 fps and are exceptionally accurate. The H4350 load requires "tapping down" the powder and results in a slightly compressed load as the bullet is seated to the base of the case neck. But the accuracy is certainly worth the additional effort.

This is the third 6.5 JDJ barrel I've had over the years. All have been quite accurate, but this one seems to be the best of the lot so far -- at least that's what less than a week with it has shown. I've fired a number of groups with the 2 hunting loads mentioned, and when the 3 shots (100 yards) aren't all touching, it is definitely my fault and not that of the barrel.

The Thompson Contender Mailing List

Updated 2/24/2002

There is a mailing list specifically for Thompson Contenders. To subscribe:

Send email to : listproc@prairienet.org

In the body of the email type the following: subscribe TC-L [Your Name]

You will get a return message acknowledging your subscription to the list.
To set your existing subscription up in "digest" mode - where you get a only a single combined e-mail message each day:

Send email to : listproc@prairienet.org

In the body of the email type the following: set TC-L mail digest

The number one problem many people have subscribing is that their email package is configured to send email formatted as HTML. Most email packages have an option to send email as Plain Text or ASCII formatted. Using this option oftens solves the problem they were having.

Don't take it personally [Wink] After your 25th? post, you get the one of us listing. As far as I know, it is simply how the UBB software is set up.

So long as you shoot a single shot pistol, you're one of us [Smile]

I'm certainly glad we don't have any of those star ratings like some bulletin board software does [Roll Eyes]

There are very few people who would admit to being "one of us" w/my name included [Embarrassed] However, Uncommon man shooting an uncommon gun!!! Seems funny how everybody wants to introduce themselves after an afternoon at the range - collecting the bets that the old Contender won for me!! Them there long barrel fellas will just never learn. Then there was the trout fisherman that fell in the creek after the old handcannon barked. I believe the question out of his mouth was " What the he** is that thing?"
