I've spotted a 15" Encore barrel in .270 for $159. I know I don't *need* it. But do I want it? Any one had a chance to try one of these out? Just how bad is the recoil? Is this something that is fun to shoot - that I will want to take to the range?

Seattle guy, I shoot a 284 win in a XP , but mine has a 2 port mag-na-port. Some guys like theirs just fine without porting. Sounds like a good deal. Ernie Specialty Pistols

Can't comment on the recoil of a .270, but my 15" .308 is pretty manageable. For that price, you can always try it out and dump it later if you don't like it. I say go for it!

I have shot my ex-brother inlaw's 15" .270 quite a bit and, to me at least, the recoil on it seemed quite a bit less that the recoil on my 15" 45-70 and was quite managable. The worst part I found about it was the Gawd Awful muzzle blast and fireball. The .270 can't burn all of the powder required to achieve decent velocity in a 15" barrel. With 140 grain bullets, the .270 in a 15" barrel only beats the 7mm-08 in 15" by 100-200 feet per second and the 7mm-08 does it with 15-20 grains less powder. But if you want it, I say get it. The .270 sure got everyone's attention at the range when we went out to sight it in.

THe Encore 270 Win barrel has harvested several head of big game for me. At the time I baught my 270 barrel I also had the 7mm-08 and did some side by side comparision. My tests showed that the 270 drove 140 gr Ballistic Tips roughly 125 fps faster then the 7mm-08 would drive the 140 gr Ballistic Silvertips. 2750 fps for the 270 vs. around 2625 fps the 7mm-08. In the rifle world, gaining 100 fps with same bullet weights is not a big deal, in the handgun world, this is a pretty large step up. My 270 Encore is a factory barrel and has a rather loose chamber. It shoots fine, around the 1 moa area at 100 yards but brass gets thin in about three firings. Good round thought, hell on deer out to 300 yards or so, wouldn't push it much farther and on our big northern whitetails that often top 300 pounds, I would limit the round to 250 yards at the most out of the handgun. Good Shooting!!! 50
