Folks, Sometimes it seems that we use this forum a lot to complain about something or other, so it seems reasonable to pass the word when somebody does something right. I sent 4 Contender barrels to Steve Davis at Metaloy two weeks ago to be hard chomed. I thought the price was reasonable (worked out to $18 ea) and Steve told me it would be about a week's turn around. I just got them back yesterday. This was one week to the day from when Fedex dropped them off at his door. How 'bout that for keeping your word? Man, do they look great. The biggest problem now is deciding which barrels to send next.
No GE, the plater runs the barrels through an acid etching process before plating, giving it a matte finish. Now the barrels look like stainless steel. I doubt that most people could tell the difference....I can't.
Verify this with Steve, but he bead blasts first, then "pickles" the parts....acid etches.....
I use muriatic acid to remove bluing sometimes, and it does not produce much change in the finish, nor does it effect the bore adversely. It definitely does not give the matte finish.
As a reminder, he also does bluing reasonably. Does a nice job. I have been to his shop and have had some work done by Steve and previous owners. Steve is more conscientious, does good work.

The normal proceedure for hard chrome is to first reverse the leads and deplate. This gives a chemically clean surface by removing oxides and other impurities so you get an excellent bond with the chrome. This also produces the matt finish. If you don't get a good bond the plating may peel.
