I was hoping for your input regarding my question on the 35 rem thread.......maybe you didn't see it???

I have a Competitor in 35 Remington..... since the Competitor will handle anything up to 458 Win Mag........I assume the weak link in my pistol is the 35 Rem brass???? If that assumption is correct, would brass made from 303 Brit or 30-40 Krag allow higher pressures????

Thanks!

Missed it, Mark. .35 Rem. wasn't exciting enough to get my attention, I guess.

If brass is the factor, you won't gain anything I am aware of using Krag or Brit brass. Both are pretty thin also.

Unfortunately, I have never done anything with the Competitor and am not familiar with its quirks.

The lockup should be rigid enough to permit whatever the brass will handle, I would think. Before rushing out to try other brass, have you taken the standard .35 Rem. cases on up to higher pressure levels?

The info I got from the previous owner says he pushed the Hornady 180 SSP bullet to 2300 using 41.5 gn of H322 (Hodgdon Max Load was 42.0 but is listed much lower now) but started seeing excess pressure signs???

I don't have a chrono, but I loaded some of the 150 grain Rem SP bullets in front of 42.0 grains of AA2230 and got 1.5" groups with no pressure signs. AA doesn't list any loads for 150 grain bullets in the 35, their max load for the Hornady 180 SSP bullet is 35.5 gn of AA 2230 for 1772 fps @ 28,100 psi which is way below the SAAMI max of 33,500 PSI. I may step the 2230-Rem 150 load up and see what I get..........

I loaded some additional rounds with IMR-4198 but haven't tried them yet.........

I asked the guys at Competitor about rechambering to 358 winchester, they said they could but didn't like to do it???? I guess they just don't like to do rechambers, because they offer new barrels in 358????

If you still lived in MO, I'd just bring it up and let you punch it out.......but......by the time I spend what it costs to send the barreled action out to you and back (IF you would even work on it [Wink] ), I could order a new barrel in 358 win or 358 JDJ or 35 Whelen or even 350 Rem Mag!!!!!

Bottom line......a 180 SSP bullet at 2300 will probably do anything I need it to.......but I'd sure like a bit flatter trajectory [Wink]

You should contact shooting chrony about getting a factory refurb unit, they run $40-50, and are the best money you can invest in reloading. Trust me, it is the best $ you'll invest in getting the most out of working up loads.
